Colonialism actually generated massive wealth for the Europe. It also triggered a cultural and technological leap within Africa that would not happen for at least another 500 years without the intervention of advanced European civilisations.
Africans were living in huts, had no understanding of engineering, medicine, agriculture or mathematics. Tribal warfare and slavery were rife throughout the dark continent and any artistic culture was incredibly primitive and of a similar level to that of homo-sapiens earliest group settlements.
The only exceptions to this were the northernmost African nations which had long buffered up against more advanced civilisations from the south of Europe.
