At times he seems bizarrely self-aware for being so insane. He knew the limits of his abilities and admitted trapping a few people after-hours in a building he knew like the back of his hand was the best he could do. He knew if he tried anything bigger he would fail. He even accurately predicted that one of the 4 co-workers would escape and "I'll probably only get 3, maybe 2".
In his farewell video to his parents he admits that his obsessions with kids cartoon shit like MLP was "pretty crazy when you think about it".
