Gave enough time for Britain and France to react by declaring war in response and then went in themselves. Why should we help Nazi Germany who is stronger then the USSR and would probably win the Eastern Front with US aid/support when we can help the USSR keep the eastern front fighting going, weakening both nations. Your reasoning is sound but I think Hitler's idea was that the Soviets were the bigger threat, not the British, because he correctly assumed that Britain would be unable to launch a land invasion to recapture France at this time. This was before The US joined the war. Even with the US helping, Normandy was still a very close and very costly battle, the allies came very close to losing a battle that they 100% needed to win. Hitler probably wanted to take on Britain after defeating the Soviets, which would have made sense since a full out war against the UK would mean leaving his naval army vulnerable. (He would have to end up losing a huge amount of naval power fighting the UK's fleet) The soviets also had a powerful Navy, and submarines. I don't know enough to say what Stalin would do against Hitler, if he would broken the pact or not.

Yep I dont believe any of the allies thought that the Soviets could make such a massive comback/counterattack. I mean you could predict that the soviets might stop the German Advance, and even push them back, but in 1941 at the beginning of Barbarossa it would be pretty hard to predict a Soviet victory and complete German destruction. So I think the thought was "hey if we can stall the soviet defeat or even bring the eastern front to a stalemate that would weaken both out enemies."
