The transition from Carter to Reagan was nowhere near as crazy as today. But then again, the media back then tried to maintain certain professional standards and at least some pretense of objectivity. There were some reporters you could have some respect for: David Brinkley, Ted Koppel, Jim MacNeil. Reporters didn't really hate Reagan, they just thought he was a amiable dunce. Reagan knew he could just go around reporters and talk directly to the people.
More similar was when Nixon was President. Reporters hated Nixon and Nixon hated them back. They almost were popping champagne corks when Nixon resigned.
