People refered to themselves as Persians prior to the revolution, but once the 1979 incident occured many started refering to themselves as Persian only to escape discrimination and racism or even attacks many times, I guess the term stuck since then for many, but nowadays most Iranians, including monarchists, will straight up tell you that they're from Iran as most dont really give a shit anymore what others think. Btw, keep in mind that Persian is also an ethnicity.
