Downside: You become a french citizen
The FFL is only a good option if you're literally bottom of the barrel scum with few options. If you're thinking of joining just because you're bored or you think it will give you discipline or meaning then you are an absolute fuckwit.
I have alot of assault charges on my record giving me few options for employment. I was a big fighter in my late teens and early 20's. Been 10 years and those times still effect me today with employment etc.

The FFL use very outdated military training, it is often the case that veterans who join the FFL assume usual combat procedure is valued, then get confused why they're bayonet charging up a hill in the age of assault rifles.

They are an elite infantry unit but they have their own special forces as well.
Some experience with the FFL here. You could go through all the training, pass everything and still not get in. They only accept a very small %. Some time ago they started to refuse certain countries, I think this is still the case. You have a higher chance if you already have military experience from either the UK, USA and most other Anglo countries. If you have no experience your chances are less than slim.

Heard it the other way around. They are less likely to accept men from first world countries because they reckon you've got a good life you can back to and have a higher chance to piss off eventually. Also it's apparently easier for them to train someone from the base up than retrain a marine or whatever to do it the french way.
I think SEALs for that matter are different as well because they argue the stuff they are doing is often counter intuitive to someone who is used to conventional warfare infantry stuff, therefor it's better to train recruits from scratch.
Don't know if the FFL has mission type tactics or a more rigid system. That might be a factor too.

LE basic training is akin to British line infantry training at Catterick, tough for most but not even slightly comparable to any kind of SF training.
Going for 2REP would make things a lot harder once you leave Castelnaudary to to Promo Parachutiste, but it's still not SF selection.

From what I hear they won't take just anyone. If you fail any of the physical tests you're out, no questions asked or explanations given. Often if you just otherwise piss off the recruiting staff, the shrink doesn't like you, or the recruiters otherwise just don't like you, you get rejected, with no explanation.
His wife fucked him over and took everything. He wanted a new life somewhere else doing something he was good at. Convinced me to go with him as I was also at lose ends. About 2/3rds through training I found my heart was not really 100% in it. He stayed I left.
