There are several reasons why they would do this. Most notably are:

1: It makes the US seem a lot more powerfull then they really are to their enemies, as they have gotten a hold of false information regarding advanced technology in the hands of the US army.
2: Push forwards the idea of alien intervension into human evolution. Having them replace gods.
3: Creating a common enemy to (((unite))) humanity against. Thus ushering in a new world order where humans will be slaves.
