Why do they cut the territory like pies? None of this shit makes sense. NOWHERE has land been distributed like that before.
I have 2 ideas.
1) Earth is flat(not likely) or Earth is TWICE as big and everything we know is just one half. Antarctica is a border and NOT a continent, but it just looks that way on a projection map
2) All the land is cut like pies toward the center so everyone who has a claim in Antarctica can get to the center because something is there.
I think option 2 is more likely.

What?! It looks like a friggin round pie ten, how could it be anything other than spheroid? If it where flat, dividing it up into pie pieces would make no sense, as there would be no central south pole, just a southern edge where shit falls off of apparently.

It's cut like that so that everything can claim to have a piece of the south pole for dickwaving purposes. The real value (if there is any to the region) is the fat coastal chunks where ports can be built, and future mineral exploration begun.
If there was something of value there, we would be seeing a lot more interest and force projection in the region, as it stands there is none. You would also see minor powers like argentina getting booted out of there slice of the pie, no one does because it's fairly worthless chunk of real estate atm.

In 2052, after JC Denton merges with Helios, defects in JC's nanite architecture resulted in an imperfect merge, unable to control the power of Helios and leading to turmoil between JC mind and Helios, one cannot complete the other. After he revealed his ideology of equality for all to his brother Paul and Tracer Tong and before he can no longer maintain control, his allies transported him to Antarctica where he can seek peace and to hide him while waiting to find a solution, where Helios with JC's nanites erected a sanctuary around the former VersaLife facility for himself, a living technological building, infused with his psyche and only those with the same DNA of JC can access.
In 2072, the Knights Templar, headed by Billie Adams, went to the Shackleton Ice Shelf to find and kill JC Denton. A tribe of sentient, friendly grays live on the Shackleton Ice Shelf, having escaped from the VersaLife facilities sometime during the Collapse. Alex Denton travels to Antarctica through a teleporter at the Black Gate Ruins, which can only be used by people of JC Denton's lineage, in order to wake up JC and allowing his merged with Helios.
