Everyone can agree that having an authority of learned scholars and doctors to interpret Scripture is a good thing. Even Protestants.
The Protestants say that we should all think for ourselves and use our own sensibilities, but they turn back around when it comes to certain issues.
Like say, for instance, homosexuality. They lose their minds when someone interprets a passage of the Bibles as being pro-gay rights (or anti-gay rights if they are a pro-gay Protestant), because, even though anyone can interpret the Bible, people can and will still interpret it wrong. So why shouldn't there be an authority in that case?
It's a bunch of words written down on paper. It may be divinely inspired, but it can easily be sullied by our own imperfect interpretation and biases.
That is why you need to get a bit extra-biblical. Sola Scriptura is flawed.

But he never really speaks about what his "earthly" mission is.
