Basically the white plantation owners on the island got greedy and kept rejecting deals to end slavery but retain some sort of feudal system that would have given them plenty, and in the end they ended up with nothing. The French completely mismanaged the situation, and the soldiers they sent to pacify the island all died from Yellow Fever. Also the Napoleonic Wars meant that French troops were needed elsewhere and that the Island was blockaded and occasionally attacked by the Brits. And to be fair to the blacks their genocide of the remaining white people on the island came after the French army went on a massacre campaign of its own. The massacre of the whites basically made them a pariah diplomatically and their independence was only recognized by France once they agreed to pay restitution to the French, which they made debt payments on for decades.
