The South was the first state to leave the union, and the catalyst for the rest of them to also secede.
They asserted that they had the RIGHT to secede, and then proclaimed their reason for secession was the abolitionist president in power.
Lincoln, and the north, did not fight the south because they were slaveholders, rather they were making their own assertion, that states had no right to secede.
So the south was fighting for slavery, and the north was fighting against states rights.

Not really since Lincoln made no claims that he had any intention to outlaw slavery. His only goal was to limit the spread of slavery because when the Kansas Nebraska act was passed slave owners migrated to Kansas in droves and started killing abolitionists.

The civil war began because the southern states believed they had a right to suceed, i.e., Switzerland. Lincoln knew the cotton gin was coming and would probably end slavery anyway, so he had to act quickly and disallow succession as soon as humanly possible. He and the founding jewers had to establish a precedent that we were a republic, not a democratic confederacy, and we'd be willing to goto war over it.

Only certain states had slavery. Even when it was legal, the north only had a few slaves. Because the US slave trade was mostly just a small facet of the larger Caribbean and Brazilian slave trade, it didn't make sense for the slave traders to sail all the way north. As such the north had very few slaves in their economy.

Time the US has been around is 242 years (2017 - 1776) and we had slavery for the first 90 years, meaning that only 38% of the time that the US flag has been used officially, it was flying over legal slavery.

The US flag only started flying in 1775 or so, with the first milita battles in boston. The British flag flew before that, and the point stands still with them.

The rest of the Union did nothing against them, and Lincoln even offered them constitutional amendments which would prevent the banning of slavery until 1900, but they refused.
Most of the North were against fighting over slavery. They didn't like slaves, but they despised blacks even more. The only reason Lincoln was able to fight, was because he was fighting against states rights.
The border states, like maryland or kentucky, had slavery during the civil war, but fought on the side of the North. Why? because lincoln framed the war as a states rights issue.

That was the articles of confederation (AoC). It was incredibly weak (think military weakness, the US wouldn't be the powerhouse it is today if we were still under the AoC) and rigid (required unanimity to change the AoC). The constitution sets out US government as a democratic republic. The federal government shouldn't be doing a lot of the things it does, but neither should many of the states. The founding fathers loved freedom and would align most closely to libertarian ideology. But even if the government should be a confederation, that doesn't mean that the southern states seceding from the US to form a confederation and fight for it wasn't treason. It was treason by the very definition of the term.
I don't understand why people glamorize the civil war so much. It was basically just a bunch of racists committing treason then going to war with the US, and the US fighting to maintain the full union (and not really caring much about slavery and simply making it illegal to spite the south for seceding).

What does it matter? Lincoln was an abolitionist, and he wanted slaves to be freed and sent back to Africa. None of our Founding Fathers intended blacks to live here among us. Thomas Jefferson said that blacks and whites couldn't live peacefully together in the same nation.
So you had one side who wanted to keep blacks as slaves, and the abolitionists who wanted them freed and sent to Africa. This is why Liberia's capital is Monrovia (named after President Monroe), because the abolitionists created the American Colonization Society to relocate them. One of many such organizations. Because the south had such a huge supply of cheap labor, that making labor more productive (which is what industrialization really does, in economic terms) really wasn't warranted. States can secede, but the federal government can also declare war on foreign states as they please. So the north was totally justified in their own conflict, if you hold the absolutist interpretation to be true.

However, the USA/union only wished to preserve the union. To quote Lincoln himself, he would have kept the slaves contained had the union be preserved. That is a side topic though. Why we fly the flag, it is a regional thing. The south rebelled under that flag and it holds a great amount of history to the south as a culturally different part of the country to the north and everywhere else. That flag belongs to us and it is unique to our region. We know of slavery and the racism that happened. I for one am not fond of that, but that is part of our history and we cannot change that. What we are though are simple southern folks. I have iced tea in my fridge. I love fried food. I like guns. I like Lee and Stonewall. I like how calm and down to earth people are down here...and this isn't like this in other parts of the us.

But to say that all Southerns supported slavery may or may not be accurate, since at the height of slavery (1860), only 1.6% of the U.S. population owned slaves. I doubt many Southerns fought for the right to own something they never owned. Although I could be wrong.
