Also wondering if anyone has any good book recommendations? I've read the Prose Edda and Poetic Edda, Varg's books (average at best) and a few random bookstore findings. Thinking about getting Stephen McNallen's Asatru. Thoughts on that one?
Jaxon Diaz
Don't read McNallens book. It is all pseudoscience bs.
Read We Are Our Deeds by Eric Wodening, you'll have to order it from Lulu. It uses etymology and comparative linguistics to determine the importance of things to our ancestors.
Follow up with The Gift by Marcel Mauss which will give you an understanding of the gifting cycle.
Finally read Sacred and Profane by Mircea Eliade which details sacredness and profanity and the idea of ritual space.
Chase Morales
Fuck paganism. You don't know shit about the pagan religion. You are all literally taking all of your knowledge from fucking youtubers. Atheism is the only way.

I'll look to see if my local bookstore has the second two. I much prefer hard copy and not dealing with the waiting period of mail, but regardless I'll add them to my list.
>There are books and archeological discoveries that continue to come out to this day. I'm sure you're just lumping all paganism into norse paganism though. Greek and Roman paganism is highly documented.

How close to omnipotence are the gods? Are we always being watched or do we sometimes have moments alone? When we die, will the gods be aware of all our actions, or can some secrets be kept?
Aiden Robinson
They aren't omnipotent or omniscient and they don't pay attention to what people do. At the least they may pay attention to groups of people but not an individual.

Depends on the god, the specific mythology, and the period.
The earliest Indo-Europeans viewed the Sky Father (From whom Zeus, Jupiter, and Tyr descend) as being pretty much omnipotent, or at least aware of everything visible from the sky. Heimdall sees and hears everything in the nine realms.
Dylan Butler
Fuck me
"Pagan" roadies, this shitty forced revival isn't even a proper religion.
Gnostic religions like Christianity and Buddhism have demons as synonymous with torments and bondage on the human soul. Old pagans were just living in perpetual fear of a dragon or frost giant coming to kill them.
It's fine to be inspired by the time, but the religion is long dead and has no reason to come back outside of larping.
Aiden Turner
Hello pagan filth.
Time to wake this thread up.

We've been referencing our ancestral gods and myths well past Christianization m8. The notion of anthropomorphizing abstract and non-human phenomena is not new and was carried on well into the Medieval period, the Renaissance, and right up through the Enlightenment. It's only now that Rational Materialism and the death of Mythology is achieving a crescendo.
The fact is that we truly don't know exactly what was going on with Pagan religions, there's only so much we can reconstruct. While the majority of people adhering to any religion are just doing it for less than noble reasons, to say that the Pagan religions of old were purely material ("I do this so I don't get hurt") is just as silly as saying the whole point of Christianity is to get into heaven or the whole point of Buddhism is to achieve Nirvana; it's an extremely limited view. Materialism and reductionism are tools and can be misused; don't try to drill a hole with a saw.
Pagan Ethnoreligions were (and are in the cases of the ones that still exist) just as much a sacred esoteric worldview and lifestyle as they were a mere material system. The material system has been supplanted by modernity and reason but the sacred esoteric lifestyle and worldview don't need to. In fact, we lack one entirely. The Christian sacred esoteric lifestyle and worldview are dead and trying to revive it is just as silly as trying to revive the Asatru that the actual Norse heathens practiced.
We (Or at least I) am not interested in trying to revive "authentic and traditional heathen religion". I'm just interested in we Westerners having a basic literacy of our heritage, our past, and our ancestral myths at the very minimum. What I'm more interested in is taking these ancestral myths and concepts and seeing what we can make of them now, today. It's not a revival or a reconstruction, it's creation and construction. I don't want to try and zap Frankenstein's Monster to life, user.

I want to till the soil and see what we can grow. Thor's oak and Christ's cross have fallen and rot, why not cultivate the plot to which they lend good soil? Why not dabble Confucianism with Greco-Roman mythology, or Buddhism with that of Germanic Heathenry? National Socialism with Athurian Myth? Why not dive head first into reconstructionism and see what comes about? If nothing else, we get to post pretty pictures and tell charming stories. But what if we can actually make something that affects the real world?
Ten White Men and Ten White Women each making Ten White Children is one hundred White babies raised on the finest stories and thought of our people. Surely, that's worth something?

Personally, I find the entire field of reconstructive music to be fascinating. They basically take instruments we know from archaeology and period texts, make them, then use period texts about music combined with period musical notation to make music.

>asshole gods As for you, a roman, praising Zeus would be the most Chad thing to do. It takes literally hundreds of sites to cover up how Zeus does nothing but fucking everything in side, while trying not to get caught by his wife Hera. It basically shows, that those in power will abuse it. the greek mythology can be interorated as an instruction for citizens to ne be blue eyed, since everybody can be an asshole, so you have to watch yourself.

Heraclitus saw Zeus as Action, and Hera as Consequence. Lightning is the lord of all, and wherever Lightning goes disaster follows but not by Lightning's own hand. Desire leads to Action, and Action leads to Consequence. All things Desire, so all things Act, and all Acts have a Consequence that sets the results of the Act right.
The point isn't "There are assholes out there" any more than Job is about "Don't question Yahweh". The Greeks cloaked everything in anthropomorphization because they had no other option. How do you understand reality when all you know is people and animals? You describe reality as people and animals. Fortune, Liberty, and Justice are three goddesses that were used to describe the concepts just as much as they were three daughters of Zeus fucking this tree, or that nymph, or that princess over there. There's more to myth than just literally what happens.
Zachary Johnson
I actually didn't see where you said you weren't christian, my mistake. As for your question, I'm personally on the fence as far as paganism, but it inherently makes more sense to me than Christianity.

lmao the pagan way of praising the gods, is basically a instructions in how to understand nature. their is a lot of symbolism in those rituals. they represent often scientific concepts. As an example: pagans in germany used bowl made of copper. the copperbowls would kill bacteria and such because of the copperions. Since, their was no way to determine the science why these bowls would purify water, the pagans explained it with the gods and nature. A thunder in the clouds? Must be a person in the sky! If their is thunder, you should go home or else Thor will get angry and thunderstrike you.
inb4 copperions are unhealthy for your body. Before the intoxication from metalions would hit, people back than would have died of aóther causes already

I'm actually ok with the traditions this is actually what most of us have in mind. i have seen crazy bitches making salt circles in theri shitty apartment and talking some gibberish they don´t even understand. cringy as fuck. like you said, learn from their way of life and the core messages (honour your ancestors and such).
i want to add a thought. i didn´t knew what german culture is until lately. i thought it was ll about consuming and such. traditions are gone and with them the pagan influences that were integrated in christianity. since nobody is christian anymore and the pagan traditions we have left are very little and the media tells us that being proud of ones kinsman is rightwing fascism, you have no identity left. nobody knows what it means being german. but everytime, i see documentaries about the middle-age, about the pagans and such, i feel a strong connection to my ancestors that struggled so much through with the purpose of keeping their family and tribe safe and to secure their future. user, my culture lies within my history. reviving it means to keep the fire of my tribe alighte. it is just emotional, but it feels so right. it feels so wrong to throw away for what my ancestors thought
William Kelly
