If you're wealthy in Australia you don't get no gubment gibs for health care, and you wouldn't use them anyway, because the more gubment the gibs, the shittier the quality of care. In fact, even our BEST medical care here is only comparable to average treatment in the U.S., which is why wealthy Australians will regularly go to the U.S. for treatment. Hell, poorer Australians often skip the gubment gibs (free but shit treatment) in favor of saving up the cash and going to South East Asia for more expensive but FAR superior health care.
There are lot of countries with higher populations than that of Australia that still manage to set up universal healthcare successfully(Germany,Japan etc.)

Here's how it works;
2% of your yearly income goes towards health care. If you earn below 25k you don't have to pay it.
If you earn over 90k you either take out private health insurance, or they slap you with an extra 1%.
If you earn over 140k, and you choose not to have private health care, they slap you with another .5%
There are certain stipulations here - No dental. You are only allowed a limited number of doctor visits per year before you start getting charged.
We have public and private health care providers (Hospitals as well) BUT you can get all sorts of different health care insurance packages that allow you to take care of public services. Which makes it obviously far more affordable for certain packages.
For me, for instance, I avoid paying my 2% per year because I have a private health care package. It costs about 30 bucks a week. I have full dental and optical, and a really general, basic general health package (basically the same as what you'd get on medicare, but a few little things like I can go to the private doctors office for GP visits which is way quicker and nicer than the public one). If I got fucked up, like a broken leg or something, my private health insurance is so basic that I'd still be getting all my treatment and shit in a public hospital. My predominant concern is dental, since, as I said, it's not covered by medicare, so if you have an emergency situation or need lots of work, and you REALLY can't afford it, you need to go the government and spend months and months on lists to get treatment from students that could be exceptional or could be terrible.
