Propane is much less of a hassle to deal with. But coal gives you a better flavor. If its your first time grilling definitely propane, coal can be difficult to start up if you have no idea what you're doing.

Taste difference depends on the kind of wood; fruit tree wood like apple or cherry lends a sweeter taste usually. I imagine if you used something like pine or god forbid plywood it would taste a lot worse. My father used to tell horror stories about what people tried to smoke food with.
