Are Restaurants That Refuse to Accept Cash Racist?

unvis.it/washingtoncitypaper.com/food/young-hungry/article/20866190/casual-restaurants-are-going-cashlessand-cutting-off-their-unbanked-customers

In D.C., 11.8 percent of all households are unbanked, meaning they don’t have access to traditional savings or checking accounts, according to a Prosperity Now 2016 scorecard. And another 24.8 percent of District households are underbanked, bringing the total percentage of households who might have trouble swiping or inserting a card at a register to more than 36 percent. Compare that to 27.7 percent nationwide.

Meanwhile, two separate inside jobs triggered another local casual chain to eliminate cash in November 2015. “We had two very serious cases of theft by our store managers,” says Kevin Thompson, chief financial officer of Jetties. The sandwich, soup, and salad spot with six restaurants in the D.C. area also operates two locations of taco-slinger Surfside.

Linnea Lassiter, an analyst at the D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute, says cashless policies make healthy food even less accessible for low-income Washingtonians, many of whom live in food deserts across the river[1] where they struggle to meet dietary guidelines for consuming fresh produce.

“I’m concerned with more and more restaurants, businesses, and shops going cashless because you’re systematically excluding a group of people who are already disadvantaged and disenfranchised,” Lassiter says. “And now they can’t have access to this restaurant?”

Lassiter believes that restaurants like Sweetgreen have calculated that their typical customer is not a low-income person of color who doesn’t have access to a bank account. “They’ll say, ‘We’re not in Ward 7 or 8, and our clientele is not low-income or African-American,’” she says. “People of color commute and or live in areas where there are Sweetgreens.”

Everything is racist

I have a credit card. I'm White. I still hate this cashless shit. If I'm out for some food I'll have £10 or so in my pocket while my card will be lying at home wherever I left it after the last internet purchase. If they don't accept cash then I wont eat at that location.

The places that do this, charge stupid amounts anyway.

The whole argument it retarded.

It's year 2017, everyone should have a card.

should you ve eating vegetarian tacos if you dont have a bank account? i mean, you can always just get a prepaid card if you are trying to not use banks.

Some restaurants are used to launder money.

They just want to track and analyse every fucking thing you do so they can better learn how to squeeze more shekels out of you

No, just lazy so they dont have to provide change.

Isn't it technically illegal to turn down cash as a form of payment since it's "legal tender for all debts public and private?"

If you don't have a debit card or EBT benefits card your beyond helping. Scrape up $50 and open a account.

You sound like John Oliver.
>But it's the current year! People are still doing this, and it's the current year!

I dont see the problem here. The sort of peope affected by "food deserts" only shop at bodegas because they accept EBT, restaurants don't.

Honestly if I opened up a restaurant I'd go cashless, too. What better way to keep the niggers and homeless out?

It's backed by Socialist International so it doesn't matter if it is illegal.

That's a good point. Hadn't thought about that.

They won't say it but it's a win-win for them. It keeps unwanted customers out and makes everything streamlined.

Hey O.P. I live in D.C.
work in food biz . the reason we do this is because TAXES . I have 4 stores around D.C. . I owe taxes to Maryland / D.C. / Virginia ..
CASHLESS = let the computer keep it all seperate .

Yeah I wouldn't want customers who can't afford or for some other reason don't own a credit or a debit card in my restauran either.

Turns out money is racist. Stop the fucking presses we need to just start giving blacks everything cause they still can't seem to figure out how to function on our society. It's societies fault not the sub human animals.

That is false. You don't need to accept cash or even all denominations

When you give your money to a bank, the money become's the bank's and they now have a DEBT to you. Meaning you have nothing if the bank goes down. They don't want you to know this, so that's why banks have to get bailed out all the time.

Look at what happened in Greece. Banks just closed their doors, denying people access to "their" money. Because they didn't have it. Fractional reserve lending ensures money can be used almost infinitely for the crime of USURY. It's a means to take over the entire monetary flow of a nation's currency.

Without making fractional reserve lending and government bailouts of businesses illegal, this will never change. Jews thrive in trust based societies, because they abuse that trust.

this the same reason supermarkets have those rewards card to track what you buy

Explain?

Right, so you need a government solution to a government created problem is what you're really saying.

I don't know how restaurants can refuse to accept legal tender. It's fucking retarded. Whatever I just won't go to cashless restaurants because I find the cashless society to be somewhat of a distopian scenario.

oh no the poor niggers don't know how to use a bank card, oh by the way we aren't racist at all

>there are people here who are ok with government, banks and corporations being able to see what you purchase

>food deserts
That makes it sound like a desert full of food

>restaurants don't
actually some states are authorizing some restaurants to accept EBT payments.

>low-income Washingtonians, many of whom live in food deserts across the river[1] where they struggle to meet dietary guidelines for consuming fresh produce.

>Implying they eat at these places anyway

if you are a fellow Burger and you don't understand his post, let me explain, D.C., that is to say, The District of Columbia, our nations capital, is in the state or Maryland, but it's Southern side is bordered by Virginia. The DC Metro area covers two states. If you are a small business owner with multiple locations in the DC Metro area, you will have to deal with taxes/laws/regs/zoning in two states and the District of Columbia.

Isn't this why foodstamps moved to cards?

I get that but how does not accepting cash directly affect that.

All the restaurants in my area are cash only because they're money laundering sites for marijuana dispensaries and corrupt Chinese cash.

If you are eating at a hipster vegetarian taco restaurant, you are pretty much guaranteed to have a credit card, if not under your name then under Daddy's.

...

O.K. Washington D.C. is not that big. in 20 minutes ( no traffic LOL ) I can go from Virginia thru D.C. into Maryland . Each area has different sales tax. BUT my bank / office is located in Mclean Virginia . I have to keep track of how much $$ cash each location / store pulled in . and pay that sales tax to each state . all electronic sales are AUTO with held.. IF ANYTHING I AM SAYING FUCK YOU TO THE JEW ACCOUNTANT.

Not worth a reply

The US has protections against this called FTIC. Under FTIC, even if the banks collapsed, the government would get you your money back as it was before the crisis.

Fucking retard' cunt

Isn't it against the law to operate a business and refuse to accept US dollars as payment? I'm pretty sure that's a legal requirement of running a business in the US.

Thanks bro . I went got cup of coffee then replied but you understand .

as a small buisness, if he does everything cahsless, the computer can keep everthing straight for him, meaning taxes. if he takes payments in cash, and those funds get deposited into his bank account commingling with money from the other state/DC, it makes for a book keeping nightmare.

No but here the USA it is illegal to refuse cash.

>paying taxes on cash transactions
Dude

It is actually correct. You are wrong here. In the USA legal tender such as bills and coins are actually the only thing no one is allowed to refuse for debts or payment.

no it is not . ever have to pay something by CERTIFED check / Money Order ?

>don’t have access to traditional savings
How they managed to do that? Opening account here takes ID, two page form and 20 minutes.

>checking accounts
On a side note, do you burgers really still use cheques? As in actual papers slips, with best authorisation 1920s security protocols can provide?

Called VAT in Europe.

I don't think the 11.8% who don't bother to have access to a credit card are going to eat at Chaia, or any other restaurant for that matter.

With you there . I know how to work the books but you still have to look some what legit .
ALSO builds CREDIT .
vs. I pull in X amount of cash.

Nope, never will. I use cash and if they fail to accept I threaten a lawsuit, because what they are doing is against the law.

Ok if you just had said electronic payments have state sales tax automatically withheld that would have been clearer but I appreciate it. So what is the name of your business?

>How they managed to do that? Opening account here takes ID, two page form and 20 minutes.
because they can't manage their money. they get their paycheck on Friday and it's spent by Monday. If they tried to maintain a bank account it would be closed for insufficient funds.

Haha like the government gives a shit. Try buying something with cash on a flight.

Any lawfags here who can clarify this?

I think most of those "unbanked" people probably have EBT cards.

What is legal tender for all debts public and private?

I'll take dumbass business decisions for $400 Alex.

not true unless you are talking about taxes

It's called offering a discount equal to half of the vat off, and pocketing the difference. Not that I'm advocating tax evasion, just sayin'

I doubt I would go back if they didn't accept cash. What they are too lazy to make proper change and have cash on hand? To me that shows a lack of respect and planning for customers.

>D.C
unsettling

DC is such a shithole

You're a retard, but what nobody here gets is that anyone can just walk into a convenience store and put cash on a gift card, which can do practically anything a credit card can do without the strings.

In theory that shouldn't be a problem I mean almost entire africa pays cashless using their phone.
>pay by SMS using their contract or prepaid balance
that's the way to pay for small stuff like groceries or a motorbike repair.
>pay by a app that works like bitcoin but using some kind of prepaid balance you can reload everywhere, scan the QR code, hit pay, done.
Your money is there, available in seconds and can be cashed out almost everywhere
Mostly used for larger purchases, like a new car, salary payment etc. as they use USD or EUR to minimize the foreign exchange risk as everyone prefers to have $20 instead of 2075 Kenyan Shillings.

That's fucking stupid. This is why we need a poll tax.

I think I will enjoy their cuisine.

Think you mean me and not the Tree Huger.
Like I am going to tell you ANONS..
give you a hint : Every Friday I am at the Ronald Reagan Building .

The real problem is KIDS not being able to eat there. Fucking inbreds and their muh racism crap. It's like ti's literally the only thing that exists in the world to them.

I get annoyed as fuck at any service business when I find out a place either doesn't accept credit or doesn't accept cash. I stop being a patron at those places unless they happen to have an exceptional service/product.

>not accepting legal tender

By golly I think I thunk it illegal

all us people with money don't live inside the city silly.. look up Mclean Va. zip 22101 .
SO not a shit hole . My neighbor ( Aus Fag ) has Diplomatic plates on his car.
I Kind of like my back yard .
> PIC RELATED

For debts, yes.

Not necessarily for payment. A restaurant is within its rights not to accept cash as long as they require you pay BEFORE getting your food.

If they bring you a bill after you eat and then tell you they don't accept cash, that's illegal.

>vegetarian taco restaurant

Get fucked, seriously

I'm not even a spic and I'm insulted

This might be a good opportunity for "unbanked" people to take that first step towards becoming an actual adult and open up a bank account

So they're effectively saying that black people are too stupid to open bank accounts? Who's the racist in this situation?

Yeah, and when currency was first invented I'm sure there were those that bitched that they'd miss out since they still only bartered.
Get with the times luddites.

Good goy! Very good goy!

If they go cashless but start offering Bitcoin purchases, I'd be fine with that. If it's only credit cards then FUCK OFF STATIST YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW WHAT I EAT GUBMINT REEEEEEEEE

>Vegetarian taco restaurant.

63%

what? having a bank account isn't a thing any more like it was 30 or so years ago.

You don't have to have a certain amount of money, credit or income. You just go to the bank and say i want an account please and fill in some forms.

If they won't lose any custom, then what's the big deal.

if you dont have a bank account you're likely not wealthy enough to go out to a restaurant. priorities. also, who the fuck carries cash these days. i havent had a dollar on me for years.

I prefer to use cash and I could probably fuck your mother while your dad cried in the corner

It's racist because if you don't carry cash, blacks have nothing to rob from you.

NO CASH NO TIP

That's illegal.
Every paper bill states This is legal tender. It can't be refused as a transaction.
You can theoretically buy a car with a lot of $1

then explain online stores that accept paypal only

In the case of a debt.
Business can simply refuse service. No service, no debt, legal tender has no meaning.

>Business can simply refuse service

As far as I know, I can't refuse service to niggers.

Super market customer tracker here, we just check your receipt instead.

>11.8 percent of all households are unbanked

niggers and illegals, who gives a shit?

Can I pay in buttcoin?

what the fuck are you

I (like everybody with a real job) get paid directly into my bank account. I'm not going to get all my money out every month and walk home with a wheelbarrow full of cash. I do keep cash money in my flat but only for emergencies.

I think this is actually a legal grey area
Say you go to a restaurant and you only have cash, if they dont let you know somehow its cashless only and they refuse your cash, then try to press charges they would lose in court.

On the flipside, if they have signage then they would lose upwards of 10% of their business (on average) compared to other restaurants and become unprofitable.

I swear people are strange

>The credit card companies need that 1-2% from the vendor!
Goodest goy in the thread award.

>Unbanked
I work at a bank. The only reason we wouldn't open an account with someone is if they have MONSTROUSLY bad credit. We even have backup programs for people with ass credit to be able to open an account. If these people don't have bank accounts/ can't get one it is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT their fault.

And this is what the fucking beaners do. Every goddamn week. The same fucking sketch-ass motherfuckers with their Resident Alien IDs come to withdraw their entire paycheck. God I hate spics.

literally anyone can get a bank account
there is not a single adult in the entire united states who cannot get a bank account

Lol what business doesn't want cash, if you get cash you can hide it from the IRS.

Not true. Most places require 2 forms of ID (more than you can expect from nogs/illegals) and a bit of currency.
