China once had the distinction of being an extremelly old and long lived nation with culture from the ancient times that somehow survived through worse and wear

Technically Japan adopted ancient Chinese culture. Today China is a communist shithole, whilst Japan still holds on to traditions even to this day. Also Japan has the highest highly skilled work force in the world, can't say the same about China
