The problem with Marxism is, it is purely a fantasy, at best. This philosophy would only ever work in small communities, where there is a legit fear that you will be spotted and called out if you are not pulling your weight. Can you throw me a bone and tell me you understand how this cannot work in any sort of large modern country? Who is going to hold Joe, the guy living 2 blocks over, accountable if he is not bothering to contribute his fair share? How is Joe going to be held accountable? Joe isn't causing problems, he isn't hurting anyone, he pays his taxes, he just is a shit worker. Is someone picking up the slack? Or is it perhaps worse, Joe is calling in sick every Monday and every other Thursday. How do you fix this? Reeducation? reassignment? cut his food share? This, for me, is one of the fundamental failings of this philosophy.
Human society is too big, too unruly, people fall short. Capitalism solves this problem through Darwinism. If Joe sucks, Joe isn't going to be successful, and Joe will either have to adapt or parish in whatever way you imagine that to be. Meanwhile, it allows those of us who are smart, capable, and/or persistent to rise to the top and reap the benefits, there's incentive to do so, and there's incentive to create advancements because we will be rewarded for doing so.
What incentive is there in Marxism to strive to, say, create a better, more efficient car? 99% of the time, if humans don't get some sort of reward for it, they will keep trudging along doing the same thing that allows them to live an easy life, because it is easy. It's hard to think up the next big thing. The reason we do so in a capitalist society is that we get great rewards for doing so.

We can agree that there's no such thing as a free lunch, correct? Things are atomically scarce. When you get something, it means other people didn't get. So in the end, by leaving you idling around, the system is reducing the potential wealth of incredibly smart people who are pretty much doing 99% of the work. Taking what you get and giving it to a smarter demographic so they can do more is in fact a possibility that would improve the lives of others.

Also, goods, in a free market, goods are produced based on quality and demand. Bad businesses are allowed to fail so that quality businesses that make quality products that people actually want can come in and have success. It's logic, it makes sense, but for whatever reason, this doesn't make sense to those that rail against Capitalism and the Free Market.

OK user, that's all fine, but you've brought up precisely why Communism in it's original intended form will never work. There are always, always, going to be a significant segment of any population that are: lazy, stupid, selfish, or even all of the above. Any of these traits significantly harm any attempts to build a true communist society, because it relies on people pulling their own weight. So, in any society, you have to account for this problem. In one that adheres to capitalist, free market, principals, these people are allowed to be free and do what they will. If they fail, so be it, if they horde their wealth, so be it, society will press on. With Communism, you either have to take the hit and suffer from their actions, or you take steps to "deal" with the problem. If you choose the latter, your society will form cracks.
