Do you know about Sickle Cell Anemia? I've heard about it in the past, but never looked into it until today, and HOLY SHIT. Did you know White people are immune? Why is this?
> There are also many people with this disease who come from Hispanic, southern European, Middle Eastern, or Asian Indian backgrounds. > Sickle cell anemia is an inherited form of anemia — a condition in which there aren't enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen throughout your body. >There's no cure for most people with sickle cell anemia. >Among children and adults with sickle cell anemia, the median age at death was 42 years for males and 48 years for females.
It's an evolutionary reaction to the presence of Malaria. It mostly affects subsaharan populations. Two copies of the recessive allele will cause the disease whereas heterozygous genotype give the individual increased resistance to malaria.
It's sickle cell allele is extremely prevalent in West African populations, which is where most of the slaves were taken from and brought to the new world. While people aren't "immune" to it. It just isn't in their genetics.

>white people are immune
HOLY SHIT GUYS, DID YOU KNOW BLACK PEOPLE ARE IMMUNE TO TAY-SACHS AND HUNTINGTON'S?
Samuel James
Greeks actually can get it because Malaria used to be very common in Greece until it was eradicated.
Josiah Mitchell
>immune to a genetic disorder Did you know we're also immune to having shit-colored skin?
Ryder Gray
you are not immune. the gene is recessive, which means that both parents need to have the gene for the kid to even have a chance to inherit the disease.
keep in mind that people with sickle cell anemia CANNOT get malaria. thus countries with a lot of mosquitoes that suffered from it would get large populations of people with this anemia, since everyone other than them would die.
Joseph Evans
that's so fucking cool
Kevin Morgan
How does it stop malaria?
Anthony Ward
White people can get sickle cell, it's called communism
Grayson Davis
malaria is caused by parasitic lifeforms that inhabit red blood cells. as in normal ones. sickle cell anemia, as the name implies, significantly changes their shape and the way they work.
i am not sure if those parasites do not even recognize those cells, or if they do recognize them but stay dormant in them, but for one of these reasons the anemic individual cannot get sick from malaria.
Adrian Johnson
That's quite interesting. Kind of proving that humans born in different areas are different. Still cool : in return for living less you get some immunity.
Ayden Edwards
Perhaps you should obtain your information from somewhere else.
Leaf keeps reading Buzzfeed article: It is believed that the cell has taken on said form as a homage to the delicious croissant.
Lead mind blown..will never look at a croissant the same way
People who have mixed with sub-saharan people will also have the disease as well " Information about the prevalence of SCD in Saudi Arabia is patchy and probably underestimated, but studies have reported that SCD is a relatively common genetic disorder in this part of the world." ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3119971/
Landon Bailey
plus, that's one great idea. get pol to meme a disease that only "meds" can contract into reality, and release it all over europe
Colton Ramirez
Malaria can be prevented by literally drinking Seltzer water. with quinine of course.
Ryder Murphy
Just you guys wait until we get super-colds. Evolution works both ways.
Noah Barnes
Canada Dry Club Soda?
There is promising evidence that Artemisia annua, also known as sweet SAGEwort, works against malaria.
Wyatt Collins
wew let me think all the way back to tech school. It's because sickle cells can't be infected by malaria, a major parasite in the nogged places of the earth. The bugs (Plasmodium spp.) also don't like cold climate, where whites developed civilization.
Bentley Jackson
Thalassaemia is different to sickle cell. Both are haemoglobin disorders affecting the globin proteins, but are caused by different genetic mutations
Mason Brown
I don't really even know why I'm posting because the first user and several other already pointed out the science, but you are wrong OP.
Nolan Bailey
Yeah most Malaria medicines are just incredibly concentrated quinine bark. Drinking that stuff allowed the British to get deep into the jungle to rape Africa

sorry to offend you Ahmed/Jamal

If memory serves, the malaria parasite focuses on attacking the hemoglobin of RBCs. In sickle cell anemia, the hemoglobin is modified with a single amino acid changed. The hemoglobin can still do its job, but it will turn to shit in low oxygen environments.
Aiden Murphy
Didn't the Brit or US military test some experiment malaria drug and it went bad?
Remember reading something about that a while ago.
Christian Jones
assuming research goes well, most genetic/inherited diseases are going to be a thing of the past in a couple of decades thanks to this little guy!

Ya, they said that shit about CRISP and it is now taking a nightmare turn. Designer babies are all fucked up.

>Did you know White people are immune?
If only Sickle Cell Disease were fatal. That would solve so many of our problems.

Underrated

the nightmare called cystic fibrosis can already be cured using phages, all that's left for the cure to leave its' experimental stage is to assess its' long term effects (main concern is cancer).
Michael White
>malaria is very common in damp environments >blood cells in the sickle shape can not be infected by malaria >not a lot of malaria in Europe so not a lot of white people need immunity
