Religious public schools are a lose for everyone. It's a great way to earn yourself a poor, uneducated, STD infected population with far too many children. The religious schools in my area offer a much higher quality of education than the secular schools. It's where all of the wealthy in the area send their kids while the poor are forced to use the secular schools.

Because bible studies and some subjects taught in secular schools are trash and they should teach students personal finance and budgeting, how mortgages work, cooking, etc instead. I do know this is possible in private schools, however.
At least Bible Studies can be seen as positive in that a good understanding of the Bible gives you knowledge on one of the main cornerstones of America. I do agree though that there's more important things kids could learn but Bible Studies is better than some of the useless crap I learned in secular school. A Marketing class I took in high school was just the teacher putting on MTV Cribs for a whole semester.
I took a really good mythology class in high school. Greco Roman and Norse were what we spent most of our time on. Was by far my favorite non-shop/non-gym course.

My point was that i was too young and stupid to appreciate Shakespeare and honest intellectual pursuit at the time. I didn't even start to use my mind until I got in my 20's desu. And we weren't delving into really abstract philosophical concepts and metaphors the entire time or even daily. We were just learning about traditional western stories. ideas about honor, what an effect these stories have had on us over time. It all unironically really made me think, and was useful as a sort of stepping stone into philosophy.
Maybe a course on the Bible can have a similar effect on other students. Most self-proclaimed Christians don't really read it anymore anyway. Education should be about learning useful things, but also inspiring students to take interest and be better.

Also, the idea that it takes twelve fucking years to learn everything they teach in public schools is a joke.
