Southern WV and North Eastern KY aren't bad places but there are literally no jobs and most areas if you go out to a store or something it's like going back in time to the early 80s.

I grew up in Southern West Virginia and I honest to God did not have any fucking clue how good I had it there until I left. I've been in Commiefornia for going on 6 years now and there isn't a day I don't experience overwhelming gut wrenching homesickness. Though I won't move back to West Virginia most likely, I will move back to Appalachia in coming years. Likely eastern TN or Western NC.

North Georgia here. People are dumb as fuck mostly, but also honest. Cops can be real dicks if you aren't a known local. Good ole boys club in full effect. Public facilities are well kept because only whites use them. The accent can be hard to understand if you didn't grow up here, and many people find it ugly sounding. It's not the classy southern drawl, it's nasally and fast.

Farmer drilling for water hit gas. I looked at a place that had a small 3 barrel a day mini oil well on it but was worried about the EPA nosing about although it was very attractive and if there was a free gas supply I would've risked it. I am surprised that it would be in ads as usually this is a hush hush tidbit that you need get from a good broker...the gas has no odorant added to it so might be considered uninsurable.

Not necessarily, you've just got to look for either smaller acreages on less fertile land, or look for areas near wildlife preservations that qualify for the Conservation Reserve Program (Feds will pay you an annual stipend not to farm on it). You can still do low-impact subsistence farming on parts of the property, but you'll typically get a couple thousand bucks a year for not doing large-scale farming on it, which it doesn't sound like you're interested in anyways.

I know that feel. I'm counting down the days till I finish grad school and can move back up to my homestate. I think a lot of people who grow up in more rural parts of the country grow up hating their home only to feel called back to it when they grow up.
