English Lit is the king of humanities because it concerns itself with the pure expression of the human soul that the act of writing affords. In theory, it uses the scope of philosophy, history and literature to make its arguments and examinations and the articulateness that this multiple discipline-straddling criticism requires to bring all these threads together and form from them something coherent and placed within grander movements of history is undoubtedly a phenomenal skill.
Where it separates itself from other humanities in modern academia is in its appreciation of the great numbers of lenses available and these lenses will often contrast.
Where the biggest problem lies is that many of these naive young folk doing the courses will see the lecturer favour one lens, often that of feminism/post-colonial and will immerse themselves in that completely into thinking this is the be all and end all of human expression and willingly blind themselves to any alternative. They then go on to be experts in this 'lens' and carry on through the system and perpetuate the incestuous and intellectually throttling cycle. Interesting idea banning them completely, obviously they have their value in the specialised areas such as engineering but it's definitely the Mickey Mouse and lens subjects that should be the ones banned / subject to higher fees.
