Communism is the next stage of humanity following the capitalist stage.
What exactly is communism according to Marxist-Leninists:

Compare the number of modern inventions we use today that came from communist countries vs everywhere else. China, a country consisting of almost half the world's population, most of them highly-intelligent, yet their inventions pale in comparison to the US', a country merely 400 years old. Chinese have very little incentive for inventing anything.
Don't give me that "hurr america would be nothing without their manufacturing." You mean their slave labor? Followed by their insanely high suicide rates? The US makes the blueprints, the commies produce the slaves; which everyone should see as a problem.

You really think your "space-race" is justification that communism is viable? It's a collection of efforts from many nations. Privatized companies are making greater strides nowadays than government funded research. One day any company will be able to launch satellites into space - this has nothing to do with what form of government their host country practices.

It's important to keep the historical context in mind. The US had two hundred years of unfettered development, largely free from the interference of other nation-states. Free from the threat of external invasion. The one major war fought on the US' soil was, albeit bloody, a relatively short civil war that left the pre-existing government intact, and much of the country untouched.
In 1905, Russia was a feudal backwater. Not only the last bastion of feudalism, but with the especially brutal variant that only existed in Russia. No Noblesse Oblige, no Magna Carta. A serf under the Tsar was practically a slave. The Russo-Japanese War in that year proved how much of a laughingstock the country was when it actually lost a war against Japan. Managing to be the first Europeans to be beaten by a non-European power. Not even a decade later, it was embroiled in World War I. That's the historical background for the foundation of the USSR. Almost immediately there was the Russian Civil War to contend with. Not even a generation later, World War Two started, and Hitler invaded. The massive human cost of fighting on that front was worse in the Soviet Union than anywhere else. At least 20 million people died. And right after that, the Cold War. All of this while continuing to deal with a drought and famine on average every 5-7 years, for all of Russia's history in the past thousand years. Under tsarism, under Leninism, under capitalism.
In that context, the Soviet contributions to space travel are incredibly impressive. It's not alone an argument that communism is correct, or their brand of communism, but it was a major series of accomplishments.
