I've seen people with 200k hospital bills and only having to pay for the cable and phone while insurance covered the rest, and they make less annually than I do and I make 50 a year. In america, its all about your insurance and your insurance plan. Some, but it's mostly just queue jumping as NHS consultants work in the private sector as well.

There is BUPA, but it's overpriced shite generally. If you get it as part of an employment package it might be worth it, but not on it's own.

I used to have BUPA at a previous job, but it cost a shitload in employee benefits tax (even though the full package was paid by my employer) and I never had any need to use it.

Yes, it has cons. When you're employed, you pay for it in default. If you're some kind of traditionally unemplyed (tradesman, rentier), you're obliged to pay healt and social taxes. On the other side when you're seriously ill, you can freely go to the nearest state hospital. Wit minor illness you go to your doctor. A fee which you possibly pay for an examination is really low in comparation with western european standards.
