Because WW2 was as much of a spiritual battle as it was a physical battle. The history books will tell that it was a contest of political ideologies- nationalism (Axis) v. democracy (Allies, except for Russia). This is not true, at least not completely.

Hitler was the culmination of this, going so far as to say that one could not be a good Nazi and a good Christian simultaneously, and even banning prayer in some cases near the end of the war.
