In the situation you describe, your mechanic realized he could "solve" your problem real quick and get you out of there because he is lazy and didn't want to bother with something that he assumed was no important (it wasn't, you would be fine without any sensor whatsoever). Its why the shops are full of old ladies taking their new cars there because some dumb indicator was telling them that the wiper fluid was low, so they try to turn these people over quickly to get back to working on actual mechanical stuff
