Question for WWII buffs: What did the Germans do on the Eastern Front that made the Soviets hate them so much? Everyone knows Hitler considered them subhuman, and Soviets who wanted to join with the Nazis against Stalin were instead enslaved/killed, but give me some more specifics. Hitler conquered France too, but you don't hear about the French troops raping German women.

Harsh reprisals against civilians for partisan activity and general destruction of cities and towns

Soviet propagandists told lies to their soldiers to make them fight harder. Hatred is a powerful motivator. Fear as well of what would happen to them if captured. Hence the stories of rapes and slaughters that weren't true. To get an idea of the tone watch Come and See an 85 USSR film

Genocide. Ukranians at first were happy to fight alongside the Germans, until they went all murderous on them.

German girls who were virgins hooked up with German boys because they knew they were going to be raped by the Soviets. Sad, but there were a lot of atrocities during the war, started on account of Hitler's deranged megalomania.

Yeah maaan, ze germans went on the eastern front with flowers for women and beers for the men!

The biggest mistake Hitler made, was pairing SS along with regular Werchmacht troops, the SS were the ones who comiited the atrocities that made the Russian population unite against the invader.

Keep in mind there was severe discontent among the Russian population before the war, but the viciousness of the SS made an imposibility the plan of using the local Russian population and turn them into weapons against Stalins regime. There were several prominent Russians that truly suffered in Stalins regime, they were eager to help the Germans, but they saw the difference between a true army , the Werchmarcht and the dime a dozen killers of the SS.

Check the book written by Walter Schellenberg, "Secrets of the German Secret Service", Chapter "War with Russia" page 152.

>Hitler conquered France too, but you don't hear about the French troops raping German women

You mean German troops raping French women?

"The biggest mistake Hitler made"
I dunno man, seems kind of hard to choose just one!

There was no need for rape, french women thew themselves at the german soldiers.

No, at the end.

And who is Walter Schellenberg, you may ask ? From the Wikipedia :
"Walter Friedrich Schellenberg (16 January 1910 – 31 March 1952) was a German SS-Brigadeführer who rose through the ranks of the SS, becoming one of the highest ranking men in the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) and eventually assumed the position as head of foreign intelligence for the Reich following the abolition of the Abwehr in 1944."

Anons, get your grubby hands on this book and the others written by Mr. Schellenberg, truly a wonderful source of information.

"Lebensraum", Nazis wanted to colonize most of Eastern Europe specially the fertile lands of Ukraine and the oil rich areas in Causasus and go as far as Ural Mountains to create a great Reich ,Slavs were in their way, they didn't care as much for Southern and the rest of West Europe

>mistake
I though Hitler was sure the building would collapse when they kicked in the front door? Hitler's success in France and Poland made him think he was infallible, which was his undoing in the East.

Lol, that is so true, but to keep this related to OP, regarding to the invasion of the Soviet Union, this one was the worst, because there were a lot of people who were sick of the communist regime, and truly wanted a change. but since Hitler was in his eugenics knee deep, he couldnt muster the idea of a union with the "untermensch".

Marxists and Fascists just hate each other for ideological reasons. They have since at least WW1.

The Russian partisans purposefully commited atrocities against German troops near towns and villages knowing that harsh reprisals by Germans would take place agaisnt civilians. Partisans would even kill any women partisans that become pregnant. With that kind of ruthlessness it's no surprise hatred was cultivated.

Is the name of the memoir "Labyrinth"?

German soldiers (not just SS either) committed more than their fair share of atrocities against the civilian populations of Belorussia/Ukraine/Russia. Whether it was the "untermensch" thing or the lack of signing of Geneva conventions by the Soviets, the German troops got pretty rapey. Yes the Soviet partisan attacks (which were massive in scale compared to faggot French "resistance") invited harsh reprisals that just amplified the hatred towards them more.

Soviet propagandists of course took advantage and spun some really wild tales on top of that (all sides did this to each other to dehumanize enemy combatants).

Peasants aren't exactly friendly to you when you plunder all their shit.
The problem is it needed to be done to supply the troops and to a much smaller extent bring food back to Germany.

Whatever they did, we got a comfy holiday out of it

>to a much smaller extent bring food back to Germany.

No to a huge extent. Whole herds of cattle were taken, much of the grain harvest, etc. Rural inhabitants left to starve. Of course, the Soviets had done a lot of the same themselves to their own citizens prior.

You said it your self user, HItler was the one who came with this silly time frame of 3 weeks tops to topple the communist regime, in the book i mentioned in previous post, you can see that several generals thought this was crazy from the beginning , Walter Schellenberg and Canaris were warning Hitler of the inmense capabilities of the Soviet Union, plus the idea of the U.S.A joining the war was something that made Schellenberg very anxious ,he even said in his book, that when he presented the data he collected of the U.S.A steel production, he was laughed by Goering who said that it was a bunch of balloney.

Years later, when Schellenberg was waiting on his trial, Goering was brought to the front cell , as soon as he saw Schellenberg he said " Schellenberg, your information was not balloney, after all".

Read shit loads of books on eastern front the Russians didn't exactly have a problem with the Germans of the Wehrmacht but other members particularly the French, Italian, Romanian and various Muslim volunteers
Germans where polite to a lot of locals Italians and French raped and murdered a lot

>Question for WWII buffs: What did the Germans do on the Eastern Front that made the Soviets hate them so much?

The Soviets did the same things to the Poles in 1939 that they would later do to the Germans. The idea that the Germans started the barbarism in the east is a lie.

>you don't hear about the French troops raping German women
To be fair, I heard the treatment of natives in our part of post war Germany was the worst among the Allies (not counting the Soviets), especially in Alsace-Loraine
But then again, we didn't have any major cities bombed to hell, and the million captive French Soldiers were treated pretty nicely

Maybe not exactly the one i have is 365 pages long Labyrinth is 444 pages, maybe the difference is the addition of the Nuremberg documents regarding Schellenbergs testimony? This documents can be view independently of both titles, i believe.

The book i have has the following info : The Secrets of The German Secret Service , Edited by Mateu Editorial S.A., Spain 1961- Address Balmes 341 - Barcelona. Legal Deposit B 23.71 - 1970

There are several books and compilations of the texts left by Schellenberg, maybe other anons can help us with this task?

They owned watches.

>Soviets who wanted to join with the Nazis against Stalin were instead enslaved/killed

Ukranian NatSoc militia was treated pretty well, I think.

The Russians lost the most men by a wide margin in the war, to the point there is still a gender imbalance within Russia. Consider how most countries mobilized women in support roles and industry due to tapped manpower, and the Russians used women in combat roles. Also consider the long term goal with invading Russia was to have a mega-holocaust so they could settle the lands with Germans, and I doubt many of the officers saw a point in delaying that plan.
