OP you should read a book called "Freedom's Forge" if you're really interested.
It has a gay title, but the thesis of the book (which it sufficiently proves imo) is that the winner and loser of WWII (and any by extension nearly any war) is the one with the highest capacity to produce armaments.
An implication of this is that nations with higher land masses are inherently advantaged as they have more area on which to build factories
Moreover, the ability to defend from bombing raids is of paramount importance, and seeing as Germany was at all times within 500 miles of enemy air bases, it was uniquely difficult for them to compete on the production frontier because of their geographic draw.
