Commies were objectively the bad guys. Just because there's a clear-cut moral distinction to be made doesn't automatically mean there's propaganda around. If anything, the leftist media have been propagandizing in the opposite direction.
For every victim My Lai and Guantanamo Bay, there are THOUSANDS of corpses left by Communist-supported guerillas and regimes in the Third World. Especially in Africa and SE Asia.
America is hardly guiltless, but Communism would have delivered us all into 1984-tier shitfuckery. Read Solzhenitsyn and watch Yuri Bezmenov. If it had been up to me in the 1940s, I would have helped the Nazis to defeat the USSR or at the very least not attacked Germany until the USSR had been destroyed. Or I would have rained nuclear hellfire on Moscow as soon as Manhattan was completed. The world would be a better place.
