It's a fantastic book, don't let the movie convince you that it's just satire. If you're at all interested in serving in the military, I'd urge you to read it to get a grasp of what the culture is like.

For someone who talks about understanding the book, you sure don't understand the book very well.
Space aliens are a metaphor. The bugs are an allegory for the Chinese, who, you will note, crushed the decadent Western powers in the book's own history. The takeaway is supposed to be that while might does not make right, right without might is nothing but prey for more violent cultures.
The jews and browns ARE the bugs.
Let's get out of the fantasy and in the real world. I'm talking about how the book promotes good values.

In the book it's sort of implied that the hive mind space bugs are fight just like the *yellow* commies (Russo-Chinese) of the East. Sacrificing several of their own, rather than incentivizing the best of the best to fight and train to be effective individual killing machines as the *West* does (EuroBurger). It won't work because it divides the population into two classes: Enfranchised and disenfranchised. In order for the disenfranchised to gain political power they have to join a civil/federal service, which involves dedicated, grueling and dangerous work. Heinlein makes a point that it isn't necessarily being in the military. It could be janitor on space station 13.
Anyways, the problem inherent here is that the enfranchised have all the power in this system. Disenfranchised people are literally second-class citizens by design, who cannot decide on anything. They have no right to vote. Okay, so that doesn't seem bad - just join up and serve.
The trouble is, the enfranchised have every incentive to prevent any of the disenfranchised from actually gaining citizenship, and all the power to vote themselves whatever gibs they want, built on the backs of the disenfranchised. Made even worse if there is ever a systemic method introduced that allows individuals to be enfranchised WITHOUT doing service. (e.g. I'm a congressman so my family and sons automatically become citizens)
This creates an aristocratic class.
And to prevent the disenfranchised from diluting their political voting power, the enfranchised will increasingly vote to make enfranchisement more difficult. Wars will be fought, not because they're actually necessary, but because millions of would-be voters need to be killed off before they can actually become voters and ruin the plans/direction of the ruling elites.
It's a system that could by easily perverted into disastrous totalitarianism.
The trouble with political systems is that far too many people create them but never ask "how can I game this?"

But the entire thesis of the book is that the people who are enfranchised have the right to rule, since they sacrificed for their people. They are the only ones that can be trusted with power.
You can't dwell on enfranchisement versus disenfranchisement as both being "muh inherently good or bad". The reason the enfranchised earn their citizenship is because they have the bravery to pit their lives on their line for the state. I can't think of many other better ways to limit the whore and evil of democracy than this.

The whole point is that everyone starts out disenfranchised at birth and they have to earn the right to be enfranchised by showing that they are willing to risk their personal well-being to protect and forward its interests. That's right, but it doesn't take into consideration anyone gaming the system to gain power, and the system inherently sets up a large mass of people to be easily exploited without any kind of protection or representation.
It continues to be a wolf presiding over sheep type of system and is little different from other system's we've had in the past.
I think more and better work could be done to isolate and extract the truly meritocratic individuals from the masses for leadership positions. Heinlein basically doesn't go far enough with his descriptions.
I just don't think the 'safety mechanisms' are robust enough.
To be fair, Heinlein wasn't exactly writing a manuscript. He was telling a short-story and the government system is, all-told, pretty barebones; it sets the stage, but isn't the focus.
To make a genuinely workable government you have to basically design it in a 'fail safe' way such that the only people who can ever attain a leadership position - by hook or crook - can only ever be meritable individuals who you'd want running the country in the first place.
Like the Aussie pointed out earlier yes the book and the movie are very different with the the creators of both having very different intentions but both are transcendentally great in their own right.

I loved the book. I must have read it about 6 times. And FYI, that's the only time I've finished a book and immediately felt like re-reading it. It creates such a unique and incredible feeling when you read it. I just remember the end of the book, where Rico describes his life has become this continuous cycle of getting into his drop pod, fighting the arachnids, getting picked up, and then dropping again. He still gets the "shakes" each time he drops. Fucking epic.
It's a shame that Heinlein only ever really wrote one other book of the same caliber (in my opinion), which was The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress. That book describes a completely different political structure (libertarian), but Heinlein makes that sound just as feasible as the one described in Starship Troopers.

Originally they had nothing to do with each other. During filming one of the crew noticed the similarities, and boom. Change a few names and the title and starship troopers tge movie was born. Other than fighting space bugs the book and movie have very VERY little in common. The books focus was more about discipline and the society.
Do you guys know anything about the reboot of the movie? Apparently it's being considered and it will be more faithful to the source material. So we will probably see mechs/power armor and more of a look inside the society of Heinlein's vision.
It would be cool if the lead wasn't white, and it would certainly fit in with SJW doctrines, but I felt like the best part about Rico being a Filipino was the fact that it was revealed at the very end of the book, in one last "twist." Not sure how they could achieve the same thing in the movie.
