the natives were savages. it was not uncommon for tribes to torture prisoners in their village square while patrons drank and partied. it was literal entertainment.
and the other thing you hardly ever hear about is how they almost all kidnapped young children, like as young as 5-7, from white settlers. when academics talk about this, they try to excuse the natives by saying "but when puritan children were kidnapped, they were usually treated very well!". well, it's still kidnapping. you can't kidnap a child and then be excused for it by saying "well i treated this kid well".
and more importantly, that's only true of the puritans experience because those were the customs of northeast tribes. in the rest of the country, where untold thousands of white children were kidnapped over the years, they were treated like dogshit and sold into slavery.
there are some questions over whether or not this particular story is actually true (though it probably is due to the accuracy of some of the info he provided, and the difficulty someone in his time and position would have had attaining that info without actually being there among the natives), but either way it describes a typical case of the treatment that white children endured when they were kidnapped from their homes and forced to live among the savage
