What did your grandparents think about WW2 and the sides involved? Obviously the victors right the history books so I want to hear German voices.
My grandad had German POWs and got on quite well with them I think. Speaking to other old Brits I get the feeling they felt war with Germany was unfortunate and only really had hatred for Japs who treated our POWs like shit.

My grandfather fought with the British army. He never had anything negative to say about Germans themselves. The only time I saw him get annoyed about it was when talking about discovering that a rather portly officer was in charge of the Bergen-Belsen camp.
From my own experience, I was surprised on my trip to Germany, going through many small towns, to see memorials in every one of them. They weren't really nationalistic or anything like that, just the names and saying things like "In memory of the war dead". Still, I didn't expect to see such a thing.

Great uncle fought in the Pacific, as a marine. The only thing we know is he served, and he lost his brother there. To the day he died, he'd just shake his head when asked about the war, he refused to talk about it.
He saw some shit. His son said he has a box full of battle ribbons, is gonna research it all one day, get his records.
