At ten, I figured out that to make a mobile lemonade stand and pull it around in a wagon would make me far more money than sitting on my ass hoping someone would stop. I've carried that work ethic my entire life and in every endeavor large and small. I have scrimped and saved and gave my kids the best we could afford. They all have college educations and perfect teeth which I paid for. I don't regret a penny of it although I do wish they'd show a bit of realization that I AM getting old and could use some help with the house and property I'm going to leave them. I'm a medical resident for reference. I make a little over 45 k a year but I only bring home 1400 a check after taxes. I have a 9000 dollar car (245/mo) and pay 600 in rent, 100 in power, 45 for internet, 30 for water, over 220$ for my healthcare insurance, 50 something for professional insurance and some other misc bills. This doesn't include my student loans which are adjusted to my income as well. It adds up quick with food. I have no kids, I live with a room mate.

I only mentioned the teeth because I am having a lot of dental issues which could've been prevented had I taken care of years ago. So it was easy for me to say here, but would never say that to my kids. I actually have never let on to my kids how difficult it has been to provide what I have. You see my parents were children during the Depression and I was raised in a "waste not, want not" house. You had to eat every bite of food or you were not allowed to leave the table. Save everything, and I do mean everything -- hand-me-down clothes and toys -- the whole bit. I grew up thinking we were poor and didn't realize until I was about 25 that we weren't really poor, just very prudent. But you're right- I really need to just sit down with all of them and spell out the numbers to them and to ask what they want to invest in their inheritance. Honestly, I'd sell it all today, buy myself a little cottage and let them divide the remainder NOW, as a pre-death "gift". (I forget the term for it, but it's something like one-time estate gift you can give your children w/not taxes.) Still, I'm half afraid they'd do something impulsive like buy fancy cars or get their girlfriends boob jobs.
