Trust me, I started out caring about everybody and eventually realized that I MUST be cold to males initially. I'm not evil to them, but I cannot be as close to them as I can to women. You haven't sat through the strings of constant male friends calling you 10 times in a row, being bothered while trying to work for meaningless weather talk more than five times in an hour, being told to "smile" while you're trying to concentrate on something, etc. Eventually you realize that if you're sweet and caring to these guys, you'll end up hurting them more in the long run because they get dragged though the friendzone and subsequently hurt.
