Sweden has basically had the same government for 80 years, the socialist democratic party, in various coalitions but always the main player.
Italy isn't more homogenous. For one it's relatively new nation state, it only really unified as one country about 150 years ago, whereas Britain and Sweden have been unified for 1000+ years. Italy doesn't have particular good natural land borders and has immigration from the balkans for hundreds of years - as has Greece. Sweden's immigration has been relatively static for centuries like Britains has.
There are also significant racial difference between northern Italians and southern Italians. Northerners are basically the engine pulling the carriage.

Well, consider that oil has only been a valuable resource for 100 years or so. Before that it was just useless sticky black liquid. If all the oil in the north sea disappeared tomorrow, Norway would still find a way to thrive. Saudi Arabia would decent into tribal anarchy .. and if the oil price stays low for another 10-20 years or so, we will see that right before our eyes.
