The real reason why Trump and the Clintons were close is that they both wanted to get accepted into New York society, including its country clubs and golf clubs, and both were aiding each other with that goal. Basically, both families are ambitious but a bit too trashy for polite society. Read this if you really want to know (which I suspect you don't):
