On the contrary, civilians employed weapons far more devastating than those used by the entire standing Colonial army both before and after the revolutionary war, until the Civil War.

We don't own assault weapons we own semi-automatic rifles that aesthetically resemble military style assault rifles and almost all firearms can put holes in an elegant however small they might be. I fail to see how some semi-auto sporting rifle is a weapon of mass extinction. It's not a nuclear warhead or a bio weapon it's a gun. Why do we own them? Because they are light, easily customizable/interchangeable, you can change calibers with swapping a few parts. These features make it perfect for competition shooting, defense, hunting, target practice ect... The reason we don't always relly on the police is because not everyone lives within 15miles of a police station. America is a vast place in case you didn't know, some people even have to deal with wildlife that are more than capable of killing us. Our country would be safer if we figured out what these crazies were up to before they go on a rampage, most of these could have been easily prevented.
