If we want to reduce gun crime, why not just ban pistols? I seem to recall something like 80% of all gun crime uses pistols, with mass shootings being statistically invisible. The problem seems to be concealability not firepower, and you can defend your home from burglars and tyrants just fine without a shitty glock. (possible exception for cool sporting pistols, which are already too expensive to use robbing 7-11s)

Today, guns in the States are legal, at least in most places. I carry 2-3 guns daily. If tomorrow guns were illegal and stiff penalties came with possession/carrying, am I going to stop carrying? Fuck no. I'll just upgrade to something more powerful.

Why do people who want to talk about reducing violent crime always defer to guns as if they somehow make the nature of the crime worse? Look at the UK, very little gun crime, quite a lot of knife crime, blunt weapon crime, and even recently an increase in chemical weapons crime. So why guns? I legitimately do not understand the focus. All it does is force criminals to either resort to a) illegal firearms, or b) alternative means. People will always commit violent crime, particularly in highly heterogenous areas.
A comparison we can make to this is hate crime. What is the difference between an assault, and a racially motivated assault? In both scenarios we have some person beating another senseless, but if it is tried as a hate crime, suddenly the perpetrator gets an additional few years tacked on to his sentence. Do those extra few years make the victim any less beaten? No, of course not. It's an arbitrary appendix to make people feel better about themselves without actually generating a greater amount of restitution. It's just one more thing bogging down the justice system needlessly.
It's people like you who remind me why Canadians ought to be fighting tooth and claw for a second amendment of our own.

A gun is essentially a fairly precise hammer, with springs and shit to get the next round into place. A magazine, is a metal box, so a ban on magazine sizes is trying to control the size of metal boxes.

Banning all guns has the issue of smuggling, and internal manufacturing, as guns aren't that complicated to begin with. Maybe if your'e a small island it might work.
Canada, Switzerland ect have lots of guns, but they also have law abiding citizens who care for their society. So any gun law is going to be much more effective there than New Jersey or Mexico.
