US State Department informs UN of withdrawal from Paris Climate Agreement The US State Department formally informed the UN that it is withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement in a press release issued on Friday. The US will, however, take part in UN climate change meetings over the next three years, which is how long the withdrawal process takes. “The United States supports a balanced approach to climate policy that lowers emissions while promoting economic growth and ensuring energy security,” the state department said. US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal in June, saying it costs the US too much and hampers the coal, oil, gas, and manufacturing industries. Trump added that Washington would be willing to re-negotiate if presented with more favorable conditions.

Car bomb kills at least one in centre of Somali capital An explosives-laden car blew up in the centre of Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Friday, killing at least one person and injuring another, police said. The vehicle was parked next to a hospital in a busy road that is flanked by several hotels. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, though the Islamist militant group Al Shabaab has launched frequent attacks in the city. "So far, I have seen one dead civilian. She was a woman. One man was also injured," Mohamed Hussein, a police officer, told Reuters. Al Shabaab is waging an insurgency to overthrow the Western-backed government and drive out African Union peacekeepers in a bid to take over the country and impose its strict interpretation of Islam. The group ruled over large parts of the nation in the Horn of Africa until 2011, when it was driven out of Mogadishu by the peacekeepers and Somali troops. ( Reuters)

>jabal al duruz kind of, because of the backstory it's called jabal al-arab to honor the druze because of their leading role in the arab uprising (was more of a couple of regional spergouts) in the 1920s, marking them as true arabs and part of the arab nation but hafez didn't like that syrian founding myth of rebellion against the french because it made Sultan Pasha al-Atrash into some kind of national hero, effectively a thread to hafez' power, and was always pretty vocal about how that uprising was just one of many revolts but he would or could never have belittleled the druzes contribution because they're actually a local power and being on good terms with them was necessary for hafez to consolidate his power I've seen this being referred to as the "ba'aths political correctnes" (Schäbler if I recall correctly), treating localized sects and communities well and respecting their customs, but also as arabs part of an arab nation
but the druze didn't really give a fuck they're cool with being druze in their druze village but also participating in syrian nationalism arabism isn't really relevant to them though contrast this with how "arab nationalists" like our own bongroach put being arab on some kind of pedestal while the people who are actually affected by that discurse just care about their vino and mustaches it's amusing to me because it illustrates how disconnected ideologues often are from reality

I'm pretty sure the locals are happy there's no russians bombing them 24/7 and the US flying drones over Idlib must be scary aswell. What would they hope to achieve? Saving their brothers in DeZ/Raqqa?

ok found sth: > 3 days ago > Today, Saudi forces have renewed their offensive of the city, lobbing mortars and even artillery in order to destroy more homes, and they are brazenly and arbitrarily walking the streets shooting at civilians including women and children. Not only have homes been targeted but also essential infrastructure, limiting basic needs such as electricity. Just as Riyadh had done with the law, the government changed the rhetoric from “restoration” to “anti-terrorism” in order to justify the use of arms.
name sounds kinda shady has anyone seen more on this story?

What really frustrates me about SAA is that it can only do good on one or max two battlefields. All other ones are a bunch of losses and barely holding the line due to heavy Russian support.
They're supposed to be a great power by now. They can't keep jobbing this hard when not one of two good divisions.

the only article i found: > aljazeera.com/news/2017/08/saada-saudi-led-air-strike-kills-family-members-170805042008262.html which is kinda related but not what i was looking for summary for those who cant access: >At least three women and six children from the same family have been killed in an air strike by the Saudi-led coalition on their home in northern Yemen, according to a local health official.
>A relative, who declined to be identified, said the attack happened while the family slept.
>The coalition says it does not target civilians.
>At least 25 Yemenis were killed in June when Saudi-led coalition aircraft struck a market in the Saada province.
>And in March, another coalition air strike killed 22 people and wounded dozens in a market in western Yemen near the Red Sea fishing town of Khoukha.
>Khoukha and the nearby city of Hodeidah are controlled by the Houthis who overran Sanaa in 2014 and moved south to Aden in 2015, forcing Hadi and his administration to flee into exile in Saudi Arabia.
>The Yemen war has killed more than 10,000 people, displaced more than three million and ruined much of the impoverished country's infrastructure.
>In December, the coalition acknowledged it had made "limited use" of British-made cluster bombs, but said it had stopped using them.
Jonathan Rogers
That is too far away. >SAA It is still an Arab army. Assad is leading the strongest and most successful Arabian Army of the last thousand years. Yes, Abbasid's realized how much they sucked in battlefield and Turkified their army approximately a millennium ago. Since then we are the speartip, the headpiece and the shaft of the spear.
