We really don't know at this point. My rule is, if it was published before WWII, I buy it. If you have a reasonable amount of intelligence, you can discern if the author is biased or not. And even if he is biased, you can take into account that bias and adjust accordingly. The point is, they were intelligent as fuck, and even with a bias, they put to shame any modern scholar writing today. Read one and you will see what I mean.
German Classicists (Greek and Roman ancient world) were the world's best in the 19th century. New England schools - Harvard, Yale - had excellent scholars back then, too. And don't be afraid to pick up personal journals as well. They offer great insight into how people lived and thought back then.
