Because, we, like the Ukrainians need heroes. When we need heroes we brush over the bad things they do. Poles ignore the crimes committed by the Armia Krajowa, Ukrainians ignore the crimes of the UPA. Yes it would be great if everyone could be rational and understand the complexities of life and history AND MOVE ON, but it's not that easy. Most people are stupid and have trouble understanding that even "good guys" do bad things. And that is in every group. The good thing is I think more and more young people are starting to understand this and while having heroes, understand they are not perfect. This allows a true unity. Not fake liberal unity, but a unity of people who have pride in their particular group, but understand it is not perfect. When troubles come, I hope Poland and Ukraine can stand together.
