The reality is more subtle. There were gradual changes which lied to modern humans. Here is an example. Archaeologists have found bones of Homo erectus as early as 1.9 million years ago. Here is what their skeleton looked like. As you can see, they aren't like apes at all except for their skull morphology. This is mostly Man and some ape together, and the fossil record becomes more ape-like the farther back you go.
