Read up on the ideologies of the republican and democratic parties around that time. The republican party wasn't always the party of conservatives in the same manner that it is today. I won't say more because I don't know enough about it to discuss it further, but I know that at one time the more conservative party was the democratic party.

Basically conservatives oppose change even tho change is always good and then they end up eating their words and defending the new status quo to once again prevent future improvements on things that no longer work.

Lincoln was racist and hated black people, but opposing slavery in that time was an innovative and progressive concepts.

Progressiveness is all about the little steps.

They're also ignoring the linguistic drift of the word "liberal" in American English over the last century.

Libertarians are the closest thing to 19th century liberals that still exist. "Liberals" in 2017 are authoritarians, which is ironically the polar opposite of the original working definition of the term.
