love science The entire foundation of the show is built upon the
dichotomy between silly sci-fi humor and references and things are
super deep and tragic bro This pseudo-intellectual "nothing even
matters, I'm insecure about existence, we are all going to die" bullshit
that R&M shits out in almost every episode is what appeals to it's
audience. The show doesn't actually have the tact to even begin to offer
an interesting presentation and discussion of any philosophy, so it
spouts these edgy teenage catchphrases. Nevermind the bean-headed,
noodle-limbed unexpressive character design, or how the story is
non-existent and only comes up when the writers beg you to feel
something for these characters so devoid of substance, or how the entire
show is a trendy forgettable scenario of the week memefest with just
enough sci-fi references to trick kids into thinking they are smart for
understanding them, or how the characters have somehow been reduced to
even more obnoxious caricatures than before, none of these things
matter. What matters is that it appeals to the millenial redditor
audience, and that's what's selling Rick and Morty

Something just really bothers me about Rick and Morty. Like, he's a scientist who has proven that he doesn't give a shit, he has infinite universes to travel to, he can probably do literally ANYTHING, but all he does is get in wacky adventures with his family.
The show has so many possibilities, but it's just another plot-of-the-week Futurama wannabe (probably literally) with characters the creators obviously hate and want nothing to do with but still focus on far too long for some weird reason.
That's something that REALLY shows in a lot of cartoons. When the creator hates their own characters, but just uses them as tools to highlight some aspect of their main character (aka their more-subtle-about-it Mary Sue) and which they would dispose of in an instant and have no idea what to do with if they were forced to do an episode with them that didn't revolve around their Mary Sue.
Bojack for example, isn't my favorite show, but the creator at least likes all their characters. It has real heart that shows through. R+M fakes it on a hope and a prayer that they'll eventually make it. "Yeah, this is what white people cartoons are all about nowadays! Drama and heart! It's like Futurama but they can't sell out to Comedy Central!" NO! Cartoons are anything the creator wants them to be, don't you get it? Trying to force everything into a single genre defeats the purpose of animation!
Xavier is REALLY niche, but it reflects the approach I think R+M should have taken. A constant rambling road movie about people far away from home, a new setting every day, a new situation, a very strong pair of characters to tie all the episodes together. Maybe you could even throw some character development in in a way that makes sense for the setting and the creator's inclinations. But no. That's not what we got.
We got Futurama, season (whatever their last one was)+1: Now with more pointless ow the edge and drama nobody cares about.

The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens.
