The North Korean Endgame

>There is only one feasible choice for solving the issue: treat Pyongyang as a rational actor.

thediplomat.com/2017/07/the-north-korean-endgame/

>In 2016, North Korea conducted the most missile tests ever, a total of 24. Since the beginning of 2017, the regime in Pyongyang had only ratcheted up the number of tests, currently at 17, with the promise of reaching a new all-time high, and surpassing last year’s record. The last test, conducted symbolically on July 4, marked a new milestone by introducing Pyongyang’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), with a range that could reach Alaska and potentially Seattle. It is now believed that North Korea will soon be able to develop and mount miniaturized nuclear warheads on its ICBMs and become an even greater threat to its neighbors, and the United States.

>The urgency of the current developments, fast outpacing the expected timetable, has raised the stakes in Washington, Seoul, Tokyo, Moscow, and Beijing, raising the demand for new policies targeting the military belligerence of the rogue state. As Washington considers its main policy options, it will have to consider both feasibility and the (cost and benefit).

>At the core of any meaningful policy vis-a-vis North Korean militarization sits one simple, yet seminal and highly contested question: is the regime in Pyongyang rational or not?

>If the regime in Pyongyang is rational, then deterrence (nuclear deterrence in particular) in combination also with other, more positive forms of engagement could lead to a de-escalation of the current tensions both in short and long terms. If Pyongyang regime, however, is irrational, there is little one can do but act, seizing a moment of strategic and tactical advantage before the cost mounts even more. The difficulty comes from the fact that rogue regimes often might pretend to be irrational in order to keep up the aura of unpredictability as part of their strategic arsenal.

>Its Iraq all over again
hey relax it will only be a three week war at most and they will greet us as liberators

SKYRIM IS FOR THE NORKS!!!

Scenario 1: The North Korean Regime is Not Rational

>Are Kim Jong-un and his regime irrational? If the answer is yes, as many warmongering policymakers in the State Department and the Pentagon argue, nothing short of a swift military intervention, with the possible goal of decapitation and regime change, could stop a nuclear Pyongyang with its new ICBM capabilities from running over South Korea, even while risking retaliation from the United States.

>Any military escalation with an irrational North Korea would result in the materialization of Pyongyang’s threats to shower Seoul and Tokyo with a barrage of missiles, likely carrying highly toxic sarin gas among other things. If U.S. and South Korean intelligence is correct, hundreds of artillery cannons and cruise missiles will pepper Seoul within minutes of the beginning of a military confrontation, covering the capital, with its population of over 10 million, and obliterating millions of lives, while also causing structural and economic damage not seen since World War II. The same fate would await Tokyo, home to 36 million. Millions of Koreans from both countries would storm China, Japan, and Russia, in an attempt to escape from the impending nuclear holocaust, while millions more may engage in a fraternal civil war. This will quickly lead to the largest humanitarian crisis of the post-WWII world, making the current Syrian crisis look like a small deal.

>China would not sit and wait. It would not favor an American military presence next to its borders, nor the prospect of united (albeit devastated) Korea under the banner of a pro-American Republic of Korea. A conflict would also prompt a race between the U.S.-ROK alliance on the one hand and China on the other (with possible factions from the North military joining either side or remaining independent) to capture and secure North Korea’s nuclear weapons.

He is going to get so many innocent people killed. He has no idea what he is doing. This scares the shit out of me. I know it sounds scary as shit but hearing him say this made it sound like he was just blustering. He's a fucking moron and can't even make meaningful threats. It sounded like he was stumbling around with the few words in his head and walked away thinking "haha yeah that showed him".

I fucking hate this man.

BUT HILLARY WILL START WORLD WAR III GUYZ!!! THAT CRAZY BITCH WANTED A NO FLY ZONE OVER SYRIA!!!!!1!!

Fuck all you Donald supporters. I will never forget anyone who voted for this maniac and I'll hold it over them so that they can never pretend they didn't support him. No more playing nice like I did by allowing the old Iraq war supporters pretend they were libertarians against war the whole time

>Can't even spell Kim Jong Un properly.
Humiliating.

>Fallout 1 will become a reality

Its not, no one is calling for war or an international coalition. Everyone was saying the same thing about Syria but you idiots were wrong then too.

mobilize

Shareblue is already here.

>tfw your Korean War vet grandpa died before he could see the Gooks get nuked and the Chinks get dismantled economically
at least he didn't live to see a nigger get elected president and suffer under eight years of that shit, though

Hell yeah.

bloody mika

Those nuclear codes, I wouldnt let him around em

GTKRWN

>Russia will also not sit and wait. Moscow and Beijing already have military ties that amount to a semi-military alliance. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is not NATO, and will probably never be, but it is also a suitable rudimentary platform for military cooperation and security coordination that keeps developing. Moscow is a concerned party in the region and would act in its own interest in an attempt to prevent a greater American presence there, as well as the establishment of a pro-U.S. united Korean state.

>Accepting that the regime in Pyongyang is irrational, hence suicidal and self-destructive in pursuit of a divinely chosen destiny to unite the two Koreas under its banner and to defeat the United States, is a precarious and deterministic way of assessing the current situation in the peninsula. It narrows the available policy options, which are frequently trimmed down to exploiting strategic advantages while the window of opportunity is still present. The irrationality theory rests on unstable logic and hides a great deal of uncertainty, along with the potentially devastating consequences for the region, for millions of innocent civilians, and for the global economy and peace.

>Wolf's face

ok

Nah, no nation building or occupation this time.

Dumb Drumpfy souns like Fat Kim. SAD

Scenario 2: North Korea Is a Rational Actor

>Rationality suggests that given the knowledge of the potential costs and benefits of each policy option, policymakers would pick the one that minimizes risk, minimizes cost, and maximizes utility. Rationality suggests that self-destruction carries very low if any utility but maximize both cost and risk, which means this course must be avoided at all costs.

>Accepting that Pyongyang is a rational actor, even when the regime shows signs of apparent irrationality, is a crucial starting point for the crafting of a successful deterrence policy that would prevent North Korea from causing a major regional if not a global conflict. Such an approach would rest on traditional military deterrence, coupled with gradual but active engagement with the regime.

>The Kim dynasty and their supporters are engulfed by a long-standing fear that Washington is out to topple them. This may not be completely removed from reality, given the fact that the Korean conflict remains unresolved, after nearly 70 years of armistice without a peace agreement.

>The Kim regime may be totalitarian and cruel to the point of genocidal, but it serves no purpose to assume that it is suicidal and self-destructive.

>Should the United States and South Korea destabilize Kim’s regime, or attack it, China’s calculus may change drastically. As a starter, as mentioned earlier, it is extremely unlikely that China will allow the unification of the two Koreas under the ROK. That means China will either try to annex as much of North Korean territory as possible — temporarily at least — in order to create buffer zone for itself, or it will directly challenge U.S.-ROK forces for the control of North Korea.

>As much as certain circles in Washington may not like it, the only meaningful policy in the current situation, and the only one that does not involve the risk of a full-blown military confrontation with unpredictable consequences...

we're all gonna make it brehs

>unironically thinking it's ever going to happen

North Korea gets uppity every two years like clockwork. Falling for the Nork meme is absolutely inexcusable at this point.

...

BOMB BOMB BOMB PYONGYANG

Not gonna lie, former Trump voter here. This is fucking hilarious watching Trump crash and burn.

But in all seriousness we can't let this guy get the nuclear codes.

at last

>This scares the shit out of me.

That's because liberals are afraid of their own shadows and everything scares you

man today is like pure heroin for zerohedge

Yo Kek has spoken

Kino a cutest.

K, keep being dumb and wrong all the time.

Man if this happens...america will have GBP and Alpha boy points for the next 50 years

>. I will never forget anyone who voted for this maniac and I'll hold it over them so that they can never pretend they didn't support him.

I feel this way every day, every minute, every second even to this day when it comes to Obama.
Maybe you should have listened. You don't get to piss in peoples boots an tell them to not take notice of the fucking stench that doesn't go away.

I just want there to not be anymore wars, lads. That's what I really voted for with Trump. Get out of the ME. Get out of everywhere. Israel can fuck right off. No more dead American kids. I want a least a few years on this Earth where my country isn't spending Trillions of dollars overseas.

>mfw Trump coasts to record-high approval ratings over the bodies of 25 million charred gooks

so what is actually going on with North Korea? at work at the moment

I always wonder inf Shadman is part of one of those groups.

>North Korea gets uppity every two years like clockwork. Falling for the Nork meme is absolutely inexcusable at this point.
I agree but,
>magapedes demanding war
Who exactly is falling for it?

...

you're making an ass of yourself

I feel this is what will bring Dems and Republicans together to finally support Trump. If he decides to kill Kim.

I don't really want a full blown war, just some military banter. Like shooting down a rocket in air, on the launchpad or something.

FIRE AND FURY
FIRE AND FURY
FIRE AND FURY

The US is not seeking war in North Korea, no party wants a Korean war because the cost would be astronomical. North Korea could hypothetically force everyone's hand but that is unlikely.

One only needs to pay attention for 5 minutes to understand that and you morons were wrong about Syria too, crying all day about how it was another Iraq. You guys were absolutely pathetic and wrong.

Trump is forcing them to stop this little will-they-won't-they game. Kim has to either openly admit he's a rational actor and cuck out on the nuclear threats, or get nuked. This is a systems approach to North Korea, by forcing Kim to choose between a series of sub-optimal outcomes.

Feinstein statement on North Korea

>stop isolating north korea, invite them to talks without ANY preconditions immediately

Trump BTFO.

BAKING

>We strap McLame to one of our nukes

You've been at war with these commies for fucking ages. Trump is getting you out of there ya dolt.

>so what is actually going on with North Korea? at work at the moment

Confirmed by US intel that they have miniaturized a nuke that can fit on one of their ICBM's.

>In fact, the United States is actually well postured to survive, or ‘ride out,’ in nuclear war parlance, a nuclear strike. The United States is a large country, with a widely dispersed population. According to the Census Bureau in 2015, it has only ten cities whose populations exceed one million people. And 20 percent of its population lives in rural areas, distant from any realistic North Korean target. That is sixty million people. Residents of large cities like New York and Los Angeles are threatened, but much of the U.S. population is not. It is important to be honest about this.

She really is.

>shills acting like Sup Forums hasn't wanted a nuclear happening since it began

They miniaturized the nukes (fuck that guy who told me they wouldn't/couldn't) and their missile technology has rapidly developed.

Good thing there will be no war, see

bake a /rwss/ thread for us
be a martyr

Boy I hope so, but sometimes a spade is a spade

Before or after the nukes?

Cringe

I am now officially off the Trump Train.

>normie libtards now side with NK over Trump

i'm starting to wish this entire nation gets glassed.

>that can fit on one of their ICBM's.
how long until its fitten on though ?

without regard to DPRK nukes, 100% fucked

did you improve yourself today anons?

F

Not as much as I'd like

>Kim has to either openly admit he's a rational actor and cuck out on the nuclear threats, or get nuked.
Kim is a rational actor and most everyone knows it. His philosophy is rooted deeply in historical studies that I will provide.

Nothing of the sort will happen, fortunately.

Ayy we could preach about radiaton safety

>damage control
They are terrified. They shouldn't be, unless they live in SK.

>They miniaturized the nukes (fuck that guy who told me they wouldn't/couldn't) and their missile technology has rapidly developed.
I thought it would take longer but am not surprised they are already at this stage

Liberals are afraid of everything, except for muslims, blacks and actual real threats

Is their amygdala not working?

>reposting

Thoughts on this flag? Based on the Caesar's Legion flag from Fallout

>Confirmed by US intel that they have miniaturized a nuke that can fit on one of their ICBM's.
>Confirmed by US intel
is it made out of aluminum tubes and strawberry shortcake?

>thinks muh college gives him better insight than the POTUS who actually knows what is going on

Well, Kim Jong Un is going on Dancing with the Stars with Milo as partner, with Trump judging the contest.

Will we even win the war with North Korea? OF COURSE!

Right?

yay, more dying for israel

kek they painted clouds on the drones

What are the leafs up to lads?

Guys, we know next to nothing about the political climate or structure of the North Korean regime right now. They have blocked every country from reporting on what goes on within their borders, and they kill people who rat them out. It's shocking how little we know about them. For us to assume that they'd act in ANY particular way would be premature and irresponsible, given how little we actually know about how they run things over there. It could be a pissing contest between two nuclear capable nations OR....

It could be a crazy sycophant in his own golden palace surrounded by loyalists serving on fear of death, with his hand over the launch button as soon as he wakes up in a few hours. Either scenario is just as likely, that he'll do nothing (in the best interests of his people) or that he'll launch immediately (keeping in line with his regimes actions in the last few years). They're not a well established country, their diplomats are stubborn and refuse to compromise.

I have seen no evidence to suggest that North Korea acts rationally in the best interests of its nation, which perhaps explains why they've never been a major figure in the global political theater. As far as we can tell, from what little information we have, they're children screaming at the world for not treating them like adults while they throw temper tantrums over how they aren't allowed to play with their new toys.

>Kim is a rational actor and most everyone knows it. His philosophy is rooted deeply in historical studies that I will provide.
If this is the case (you never did last thread), then this marks the beginning of the end of their nuclear program.

Worse, you have lots of fans of communism and the North Korean regime here on Sup Forums. They are open anti-western anti-imperialist socialists.

They developed faster than most people thought and I am really happy to gloat that I am totally correct, they would get one this year.

He wants muh Nobel Peace Price
