It's not really a surprise it took hold in government or media. None of these institutions are in touch with reality. Academia gets state funding and doesn't really have standards of success like a business. The government is full of bureaucratic holes where ideologues can spread their cancer. And the media? They need to sell a product, but they often receive funding from sympathetic organizations and have an air of legitimacy that allows them to indulge in bullshit.
Even the cancer infecting the comics industry, games journalism, and tabletop gaming was either an infection of PR, or has already lead to financial damage to the companies involved. Comics are suffering. Old games journalism is dying. Tabletop gaming is a mixed bag, where core design is not subject to the whims of social justice, but the presentation is. So far at least.

I'm being overly verbose, but my point is pretty simple. All current SJW infections have been institutions divorced from the real world, or companies that produce consumer media. Actual hard science, engineering, etc. has been under attack for a long time. But this is, as far as I know, the first time we've seen an SJW infection take hold in a company that doesn't produce media, but actually designs new technologies.
The culture war finally spilled into the open shortly after the Trump inauguration, with prominent youtubers like Laci Green suddenly getting attacked by their own for asking questions. To quote Heath Ledger's Joker, "When the chips are down, these civilized people... They'll eat each other." And it seemed this was the beginning of the end. We were winning. We STILL ARE winning. This isn't meant to be demoralizing. The fact is we continue to devastate our opponents. We win battle after battle despite the seemingly insurmountable forces arrayed against us. And there seems to be no defeat in sight for us.
But if the infection has taken hold even in companies that do R&D, the companies at the forefront of cutting edge technology, what possible outcome can there be besides collapse? What does this say about our alleged greatest minds if even they have fallen victim to the brainwashing. I see so many smart people buy into it completely, without any reflection or self-awareness.
This entire culture war has given me anxiety since it started several years back. I've lost friends for the crime of meekly asking questions or quietly admitted I voted for Trump despite thinking he was a buffoon. I've suffered more hate from liberals for disagreeing than any christians I know for being bisexual. And with the recent gains it became clear we are going to win. There's no stopping it now. We are going to win decisively. But if the infection is so complete, the nearly every institution in our society is going to fail and collapse. Our greatest minds somehow collectively closed themselves off to challenge and dissent. None of them are capable of critical thought. Somehow we, a loose collective of shitposters, basement dwellers, and memelords, outwitted every institution in our society by standing up, looking around, and saying a few obvious truths.
