UN: 20mn face war-linked famine in Yemen, Somalia, S. Sudan, Nigeria More than 20 million people are at risk from famine in Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan and the northeast of Nigeria, the UN warned on Wednesday. The Security Council officially declared for the first time that the threat was directly linked to the armed conflicts raging in the afflicted areas. “The Security Council notes the devastating impact on civilians of ongoing armed conflict and violence,” the 15-member UN body said. It went on to issue a call for all parties “to urgently take steps that would enable a more effective humanitarian response.” According to the UN’s humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, only $2.5 billion have so far been paid up by donors to tackle the crisis, out of a total of $4.9 billion urgently needed. UK says EU offers restricted post-Brexit residency rights to Britons The EU has proposed that Britons living in the bloc after Brexit will only have the right to stay in the country where they are resident when Britain leaves, Brexit minister David Davis said on Wednesday. In a letter updating a committee of lawmakers from Britain’s upper house of parliament on the negotiations, Davis said the EU was only offering restricted residency rights to Britons. The offer “does not guarantee the holder… any right to onward movement within the EU, for example to work or study in a neighboring member state,” he said. After the first round of talks last month, chief EU negotiator Michel Barnier said there was “a fundamental divergence” between the two sides on how to protect the rights of expatriates after Brexit. Germany will still deport some Afghans German officials say a review of the security situation in Afghanistan supports the current practice of deporting certain Afghan asylum seekers back to the country. A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry says a recent official report concluded that the conflict in Afghanistan doesn’t put all civilians at risk. Martin Schaefer said Wednesday that “the individual threat level for people who live in Afghanistan or return to Afghanistan depends on a multitude of factors.” Interior Ministry spokesman Johannes Dimroth said Germany would continue to deport Afghans who are considered a threat, have committed crimes or persistently refuse to reveal their identity. Germany suspended large-scale deportations after more than 100 people were killed in an attack near the German embassy in Kabul in May. (AP)

Thousand migrants saved after being left in Niger desert – UN Rescue teams have saved a thousand African migrants abandoned by people smugglers in the Niger part of the Sahara desert in recent months, the UN’s International Office of Migration (IOM) said Wednesday. “A total of 1,000 migrants have been rescued since April of this year in northern Niger by the [IOM’s] search and rescue operations,” the agency said. “More dangerous routes are being used by smugglers,” it said, after carrying out a six-day assessment of the Tenere desert and in Niger’s border region with Libya, where migrants wait to cross the Mediterranean to get to Europe. The IOM is running search and rescue operations under the MIRAA project, funded by The Netherlands. The tally of saved lives stood at 600 at the end of June. In May and June, the bodies of 52 migrants were found in the desert. (AFP)

Austria increases border controls to stem migrant entries Austria’s interior minister says police and soldiers are increasing controls on the country’s eastern and southern borders in response to what he says are increased numbers of migrants entering illegally. Wolfgang Sobotka says the measures will be in effect on border crossing points with Hungary, Slovenia, Italy and Slovakia. He said Wednesday the move is necessary because larger than usual numbers of migrants have been intercepted along these borders. He says that some of the migrants were stopped at border crossings that were previously seldom used in attempts to enter Austria illegally. (AP)

5 journalists arrested by Palestinian security services – report Palestinian security forces have arrested five journalists from local media outlets, including one affiliated with Hamas, a journalists’ union and official media said Wednesday. Official Palestinian news agency Wafa cited a security source confirming four journalists had been arrested, saying they were accused of “leaking sensitive information to enemy groups.” The Palestinian Authority run by president Mahmud Abbas is based in the West Bank, while Islamist movement Hamas controls Gaza. Abbas has been seeking to increase pressure on Hamas in recent weeks, including by cutting public sector salaries and payments for electricity in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned the arrests. (AFP)

Aid groups say Yemen airport closure hinders aid, traps patients Fifteen aid groups on Wednesday called on warring parties in Yemen to reopen the country’s main airport, saying a year-long closure was hindering aid and preventing thousands of patients from flying abroad for life-saving treatment. “The official closure of Sanaa airport, one year ago today, effectively traps millions of Yemeni people and serves to prevent the free movement of commercial and humanitarian goods,” the statement signed by groups including the International Rescue Committee and the Norwegian Refugee Council said. Yemen has been torn apart by a civil war in which the exiled government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, backed by a Saudi-led military coalition, is trying to push back gains made by the Houthi group. The Houthis control most of the north, including the capital Sanaa and its international airport while the Saudi-led coalition controls the airspace. (Reuters)

Afghan Taliban release villagers held after attack The Taliban released 235 villagers held after the insurgents captured a village in the northern province of Sar-e Pul, a senior official said. Provincial Governor Zahir Wadat said the people from Mirza Olang village had arrived in Sar-e Pul, the main town of the province, although some others were still with the Taliban. The village was overrun at the weekend, with as many as 50 local people and militia members killed. (Reuters)

>Iraq to hang 27 Isis members over role in massacre of army recruits at Camp Speicher Up to 1,700 unarmed young men died in the attack on Camp Speicher after Isis swept into Iraq from neighbouring Syria in June 2014
Realistically, how many new soldiers does ISIS get compared to government forces? I know that ISIS has forced conscription, but there's only so many men living in the territory they occupy, and that territory keeps shrinking. Do government forces get new recruits from places they liberate who want revenge on ISIS, or do they conscript to? I guess I just want to know who has worse attrition
Michael Perry
I can't help but question the behaviour of these commanders if ISIS has the possibilities to engage them with ATGMs and IEDs. Maybe there are traitors in the SAA ranks feeding them intel.

>Kissinger Warns Trump: ISIS Is Keeping Iran in Check, You Must Not Let Tehran Fill the Void
“In these circumstances, the traditional adage that the enemy of your enemy can be regarded as your friend no longer applies. In the contemporary Middle East, the enemy of your enemy may also be your enemy. The Middle East affects the world by the volatility of its ideologies as much as by its specific actions,” he wrote in an article last week for CapX.
“The outside world’s war with ISIS can serve as an illustration. Most non-ISIS powers—including Shia Iran and the leading Sunni states—agree on the need to destroy it. But which entity is supposed to inherit its territory? A coalition of Sunnis? Or a sphere of influence dominated by Iran?
“The answer is elusive because Russia and the Nato countries support opposing factions. If the ISIS territory is occupied by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards or Shia forces trained and directed by it, the result could be a territorial belt reaching from Tehran to Beirut, which could mark the emergence of an Iranian radical empire,” he wrote.

>US denies bombing Iraqi Shi’ite militia near Syrian border
The U.S.-led coalition fighting Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant denied yesterday responsibility for an attack near the Syrian border which killed dozens of members of an Iraqi Shi’ite militia and, that group said, several of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards.
A spokesman for the Iran-backed Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada militia said 36 of its fighters had been killed in the attack on Aug. 7 and 75 others were wounded and receiving treatment.
“We hold the American army responsible for this act,” the militia said in a statement late on Monday, noting that they were targeted with smart rockets.
Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Aug. 8 that initial investigation showed that ISIL launched the attack against the militia group.
“It seems that Daesh [ISIL] carried out a breach using artillery and car bombs,” Abadi said in a televised press conference in Baghdad.
The U.S.-led coalition, which is attacking ĞSĞL militants from the air in Syria and Iraq, said the allegations were “inaccurate” and denied conducting air attacks in that area at the time.

>Germany detains suspected 'IS' member accused of war crimes in Syria A 29-year-old suspected member of the so-called "Islamic State" has been taken into custody by German authorities. The suspect is accused of killing a man in Syria for alleged blasphemy and leaving his body on display.
>According to the prosecutor's statement, Fares A. B. first joined the Nusra Front militant group in 2013, before becoming an IS member in the early summer of 2014 - when the group claimed large chunks of territory in Iraq, and then Syria.
The suspect then worked at an IS prison where he is thought to have abused at least three prisoners. During a vehicle check, Fares A. B. also allegedly beat the driver of a pickup trick, "repeatedly hitting the victim in the head with his machine gun," the statement said. In the summer of 2014, the suspect and two other IS members shot and killed a man for alleged blasphemy in a public execution at a village in the Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor. The body was then put on display in the village for three days, prosecutors said in a statement.

>Israeli warplanes bomb Palestinians BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:45 P.M.) – Israeli combat drones and F-16 fighters took to the dark skies over northern Gaza last night, bombing several targets.
The IDF released a statement after the raids claiming that they had struck two Hamas targets in response to a rocket which landed in the Hof Ashkelon region of Israel although no damage was done and no one was injured.
Hamas have not claimed this rocket attack, but Israel insists that every rocket from Gaza is a government (Hamas) action. A Hamas-controlled news agency, Al-Aqsa TV, was the first to report on the Israeli areal bombardments in northern Gaza. Witnesses nearby recorded the strikes with their phones. Children were awoken from their sleep in the midst of the powerless Gaza night (a regular occurance).
Reports indicate that there have been four injuries as a result of the Israeli air raids. All victims are being treated at Shifa Hospital, one suffering critical damage.
