Escapism does not require virtual reality, nor any modern technology for that matter. The core definition of escapism is "escaping" reality. But, reality cannot be defined, and instead exists as each of our individual perspectives. Therefore, because I and you, for example, have different realities, we would each have a different definition of what "escapism" would be. For example in video games or sci-fi novels you could argue that engaging in an artificial world is a form of escapism, and I would argue that it is indeed part of this world, and may affect many users' lives, and is therefore completely relevant. But to argue that doing one thing instead of doing something else is escapism and is therefore bad is a stupid argument, and that's the argument that I see every time in this non-debate. The point is, we are all free to do what we want without other's judging our actions and without us having to justify our behavior to anybody. Nothing that I do needs to be understood by anyone, nor does it require a definition. Please stop trying to categorize normal human behavior as negative by using escapism which has a negative connotation. People made believe in fiction since the beginning of time, and it is truly insulting for me to read articles, even here on Sup Forums, that are so belittling of our individual imaginations.

Most people in their 20s don't drink because they enjoy the taste, they want to get wasted. People literally think it's impossible to have fun without alcohol being around nowadays, and that's only because it's the only way for them to do stuff without having their bad thoughts nagging them in their mind. But instead of fixing their shit and getting rid of the problems in the first place (which often is money related, so drinking makes it even worse) they drown their sorrows. Imagine if tomorrow we woke up and alcohol suddenly made people extremely sick? I can assure you depression cases and suicides would skyrocket, but eventually things would become better than before.
