Police defend controversial protest law in court
This is done so that 'unlawful gatherings' do not destroy property.
"Pillay said that the purpose of giving a notice of intention to protest was to ensure that proper planning is done, that gatherings are managed in an orderly manner with minimal disruption, and that any risk of violence is mitigated to the greatest possible extent. It also allows for the proper deployment of police resources."
For context, protests has been part and parcel here for decades now. However, clashes between protesters and police are commonplace.
The majority of protests are over service delivery by the government. The aftermath of the protests usually result in a lot of local businesses vandalized/looted, or if its on the border of a highway, the roads are blocked off with burning tires.
What would a libertarian solution to this be? I'd say in short shift over to privatize service delivery. However, considering the dependency on welfare, that would hardly be feasible.
Should businesses allow for greater private security, or hand over more jurisdiction to the police to protect them. The latter case extends to highways, which disrupts business and travel between cities.
Or in short, is this all a ploy by the state to give itself more authority to stamp out dissidents?
