There's also nuclear energy by fusion but it's not doable in a large scale at the moment. It's going to take decades more to achieve and possibly another decade or two for it to be competitive as it enters the market.
There's only one answer: Oil. European countries, despite their current bitching, will import more oil than they do now. Oil will still matter to the rest of the world. But it won't dictate American foreign policy in the future as the US will become energy independent and their people (number more than 360 million) will help keep the US petrodollar strong.
