Agreed on your comments about the current situation. I'm worried that the government has lost control. No way should the events in Virginia and North Carolina have happened in the first place, in fact two police officers have died! If the vast majority of the people in NC wanted the statues moved, they should have gone through the correct channels. But for them to tear down these statues, and for the government to stand by and allow it, shows that the government has lost control. Hopefully there will be a wake-up call.

It's fine to try and understand it from a history perspective. I think it's fine to even have the statues. I'm not suggesting banning anything or breaking statues. What I am saying is you have other ancestors too. Ones that go further back than the civil war, and ones that are far past it. People from the south who can surely instill pride without having their main defining characteristic being slavery. Hell, I don't think there's any reason the south can't create a new era of pride that doesn't tie itself to the confederacy at all.
You seem to be saying that anyone that interprets your honoring of these statues as racist is wrong, but how can you even blame them? The primary thing the confederates fought over was slavery. They wanted to keep black people enslaved. And apparently there exist no other southern figures to respect?
